Hey guys! Hope all is well. I have just acquired an infant red squirrel. He's on formula and eating very well. I'll be ordering him some baby squirrel blocks as well.
My question is this. How different is it to raise a red squirrel? I've only raised grey. Any help or suggestions welcome.
Not sure on exact age but his eyes just opened. Seems very healthy as he eats very well and is content.

They tend to wean themselves earlier than greys. At this point I would not offer block just yet for that reason alone.
We want them to stay on formula as long as possible.
Their eyes open at roughly the same as greys, but I found sometimes it's actually a few days earlier.
What formula are you feeding.
We only suggest the POWDERED Puppy Esbilac with pre and pro biotics. NO Fox Valley 32/40.
Some with do a 50/50 combo of Esbilac and FV 20/50.
If you order blocks for him get the Hi-Protein Blocks - for Baby Squirrels and Flyers.
Reds have a higher protein requirement, though I feed them the same veggies as the
greys according to the chart.

Yes, he's on the Esbilac puppy formula now. Ordering high protein blocks for when he is ready (gotta have them on hand).
How long do reds need to be cared for before release?

As long as it takes.
Never before 14-16 weeks, and never wean them.
Some people wean squirrels so they can release. :nono
