I just found out that cherry, apple and peach pits (and other similar fruit) have traces of cyanogenic glycose which is otherwise known as cyanide or arsenic. Although not harmful enough for humans (unless huge amounts are ingested) can this be harmful to squirrels? It stands to reason that if they chew just the exterior of the pit and not the inside which is usually difficult even for a squirrel there is no harm. Squirrels will think its a nut and they will try to break through with their teeth to eat the inside. If you have any data on this, it would be appreciated for you to share.
I have heard of cases of cherry poisoning in dogs. If this could be fatal for dogs, it is logical for rodents to succumb to the same.
Many thanks,
Randy
