Hi guys, long time no see.
My nephew showed up tonight with what I'm pretty sure is a baby woodchuck.
I know it's very late in the season for pups. She's a chubby little girl with fur at goes from charcoal to ash gray and a blunt tail that's only a quarter inch long. Her eyes are still shut tight.
I put her on Pedialite right away, trying to get a couple drops in her every half hour. She was definitely dehydrated and I will continue this hourly. She's is moving, and will swallow and Since I'm retired now and have way too much free time, I think she's got a shot.
I was gonna grab some puppy formula tomorrow AM. I was just wondering if there were any radical differences between whelping a 'chuck' and a squirrel, any advice is welcome.
...and how she came to be this tiny this late in the season? Shouldn't she be half grown by now?

Nice to see you all again.

M

I have a friend who rehabs groundhogs. Can you send me a picture? If texting is easier, you can text it to 203 214-7427

The Mid-Atlantic hoggy expert says that they are big squirrels. The biggest challenge is keeping them from aspirating. They can suck the chrome off a bumper.

My friend used a double nipple approach and she (the groundhog) never aspirated once. I'll see if I can get a picture of it. What is this one's weight?

She's 46 grams, and doesn't like the fruit Pedialyte or the bright lights in the office.
I'll run out for formula as soon as the stores open.

Can somebody link me to info on a "Double Nipple"?

Uhm, that is a bunny!

You don't need a double nipple.

Ah-HA.
That would explain some things.
I've never seen a rabbit that young before, It's bigger then I would have expected.

But now you REALLY need some good advice, 'cause it's a (cue ominous music here) BUNNY.

Squirlgirl? Milo's Mom? Bunny formula help needed! :hello

1/2 cup KMR (using the large side of the scoop that comes with KMR, use 3 scoops powder and 6 hot water to make a 1/2 half cup)
1/2 cup Whole Goats Milk (if using powdered use the same 3 powder/6 water as you did for the KMR - if using fresh GM just measure out 1/2 cup)
1-1.5 TBSP Colostrum (for a bunny this young it is very important)
3cc heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon pro-biotic

Make sure you use HOT water.
Formula must rest for a few hours to allow the colostrum to break down
Bun buns like their formula hotter than squirrels do
Feed 10% of body weight per feeding (weigh in morning after you potty, then identify 10% of weight and feed that amount twice, then weigh next morning and do it all over again)
Bunnies get fed TWO times a day - morning and evening

Thank you MM for such precise instructions. I have started writing down these special formulas and info in my rehab notebook and I love it when it's all explained out so perfectly. :great:great

Hi there. I just did bunnies for the first time and released them about a week ago. Here's my thread if you're interested, it may help.

I used the exact formula that was recommended here and they did great.

Make a cave (dark place) in the bin/cage. Mine lived in it and were very happy to sleep a lot and ignore the world. I used a square basket lined with fleece and it was very convenient to cover the front and pull the whole basket out of the cage for feeding. Keep his area very quiet, handle just a little. They stress. Also, I read that they are comforted by sister and brother bunnies, to snuggle with, so maybe place a bunny sized stuffed animal in the cave with him.

You're welcome. The amount of times I've typed this out over the past few years...maybe it needs to be a "Sticky".

OH! BTW, bunny pee is alarmingly dark. Like squirrel people usually go OMG, and start screaming life threatening dehydration and generally go into an instant panic.

Bunny pee can look grayish, brownish, yellowish, but it is way darker than squirrel pee.
