So my squirrel was bitten yesterday by what looks like another squirrel. I saw blood on her patio. She often chases a chipmunk out of the screened it porch but it was probably another squirrel. Should I give her antibiotics to prevent another an abscess? It is in the area of her last abscess!

Have you seen a wound? Is your squirrel released?

Yes. It looks like it did when she got bit last time. She is released but she lets me hold her.

The biggest concern with a bite on a released squirrel is who the bite came from. If it's another squirrel cleaning it and watching it may be ok. But if the bite could possibly have come from a cat, it could be deadly. My released guy has been bitten a couple of times. I also can hold him, so I treated the wound with diluted Betadine and applied some antibiotic salve and gave clavamox antibiotics. I also brought him inside so I could monitor him. If you have access to antibiotics it might be wise to dose her. If you get a weight on her and the type and strength of the antibiotic, someone on here will be able to help you.

I'll weigh her when I get home. The wound is already healed, just a little lump is left when it was. It looked like her last squirrel bite. Fingers crossed it is. She is constantly chasing squirrels out of her yard and she is a small squirrel. There is a squirrel fam that beats up on her and has taken over some of her territory. I have some meds. I'll have to check which ones.

These are the meds I have for her. I still have to weigh her. I'd guess around 128 lbs. her eye looks swollen today. You can tell she has been rubbing it i just gave her revolution bc it is the day she should get it.

Someone should be along to dose for you once you get the weight. If they don't you can start a new thread asking for dosing help. Although if the wound is healed I don't know if it will be recommended to treat with antibiotics.
How long ago was she bitten? And what was the location of the bite? Do you feel the swollen eye is related to the bite?

She was bitten on Thursday on her right hip. I don't know if the swollen eye is related; it could just be bad timing. She has had her eye swollen shut before. She is really sensitive to flea bites. She has some lumps on her right now and the usual dried out flea bites.

The bites look like they are healing nicely. I would continue to clean them with diluted Betadine solution. I'm not sure if anyone would recommend abs at this point or not. It's been 4 days since she was bitten. If it was a cat bite I would think she would be ill by now.
I hope others will chime in and offer some advice.

I don't like the idea that there are lumps on the same side as the hip injury. These can abcess under the skin and, especially with cat bites, will take almost a week to be obvous and by that time a lot of poison is going through the squirrel's system. I would begin antibiotics now, as a precaution....probably the metronidazole.

Ok i'll start tomorrow. Is this med safe for her if she is pregnant? She was in heat on the 27.

I think that bump is the scar from a huge abscess she had drained last fall. The bite is in the same spot.

How much clavamox did you give her -

IR mentioned using the metronidazole. Do you have clavamox?

I just noticed she has about five lumps. She has little bumps under her arms. Maybe she is having an allergic reaction? They seem like they itch her because they look irritated. I'm really nervous about the largest lump which is under her "arm pit" on the same side she was bitten. I think it is a swollen lymph node. Her eye still looks a little swollen, but not as bad as it was yesterday. I gave her metrondizale today at one.

Second evening in a row that I have seen a black cat next to the patio. That is a bad sign. What should I do?
Mel1959

Since Island Rehabber mentioned using metronidazole I'd go with that if you have dosing for it.

Are the five lumps aligned so that they could be from the cat's claws - from either one paw or both if lumps on opposite sides?

You should start the meds ASAP. It's not going to harm her to be on the antibiotics, but it might make her tummy a little upset. Give her probiotics 2 hrs before or after dosing the antibiotics.
Olorin19 makes a good point about the bumps.

I don't think so. They are along almost all of her torso. I changed her bedding a few days ago and had washed it with different laundry detergent I never heard of and bought at TJ Maxx. I just bought tide. Maybe that'll help. I started her AB. Thank you everyone for your help.

It definitely could be pox, especially if they are popping up all over. Someone with more experience than myself should respond. If it is pox, treating it ASAP with acyclovir or valacyclovir and CAOH immune barrier has helped. The key is starting the treatment early. Poor baby. This is a horrible disease.

Bump! Someone who is familiar with pox hopefully will chime in. I am familiar with the way pox looks when it's in an advanced stage, not when it is just forming. Please someone chime in after looking at the pictures. If you think it's pox, please send dosing and reconstitution for 1000mg valacyclovir (valtrex) pills in a pm. I sent a couple of pills to Negerto30 a couple days ago. Thank you. :grouphug

I sent dosing instructions.
Not sure about this being pox,
I think another photo of the whole body where the bumps are, would help.

Post #30 looks like a bot. Are you sure they're not bots? Do you see serous fluid draining from a hole?
. I don't know if you have bots where you are. Just a thought.
I just read some other info. I need to see what antibiotics are being given. You shouldn't give Metronidazole by itself. Let me go back and read. Seems like I saw Clavamox also.

No, those aren't bots. You need to start a second antibiotic right away. Pox usually doesn't start on the torso but I won't say definitively that it isn't pox. My concern is that if this started as an abscess and is traveling under the skin and causing satellite abscesses it is very serious. (necrotizing fasciitis)
I would start Clavamox and Clindamycin and drop the metronidazole. The metronidazole only has coverage for anaerobic bacteria. It has NO aerobic coverage at all. It would not touch Pasterella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, etc. If there are anaerobic organism involved the Clavamox has some anaerobic coverage.

Sorry, I see you don't have Clavamox. The Clindamycin is good but very narrow spectrum. The SMZ-TMP isn't a good choice if she is pregnant. :(
Negerto30

I doubt she is pregnant. She is almost four and has only had one baby that died after a week. She was in heat on the 10th of June and doesn't look pregnant.

This is the lump on Thursday. She won't let me look at her chest. I'll try at a calmer time of the day. What AB (STX-TMP, augmentin, or clindamycin) should I start today? Also, I received the CAOH immune booster today to treat pox; can I give that to her too?

I would also try warm compresses on that to see if it will drain.

Wow, those look great. I'm glad the new AB's have helped. I'm not sure what to think about the new lesion on the ear. If it wasn't for that I would say stop but the new one concerns me. I think I would discontinue the Clindamycin and continue with the Clavamox for 3 more days just as a precaution.

Negerto30

I'm not sure. There were two days where she buried her AB instead of taking it, which is why I'm guessing the new lump formed. I have since spruced up her AB pecans and walnuts, so she wants to take it again.

Ok, I saw that HRT4SQYRLs recommended stopping the Clindamycin and continuing the Clavamox till Wed. I would follow her recommendations.
You mentioned something about this squirrel being really sensitive to flea bites? Could these be flea bites that are becoming infected? Would a course of Ivermectin make any sense?

She is still on Augmentin. The horrible black scab fell off of her lump. It is now small and flesh colored. All of the lumps on her face and head are flat and she is bald in those spots. Should I continue AB until her lump is completely gone?
HRT4SQRLS
07-29-2017, 06:09 PM
I would stop the antibiotics. If that is a small pus pocket under the skin, the antibiotics wouldn't really help at this point. It would have walled itself off by now. It will probably be absorbed.
That's not a bot is it? Do you have bots where you are?
Negerto30
07-30-2017, 09:37 AM
I live in NJ. I do not think it's a bot. All of the lumps were always dry. The little ones never had any type of hole in them. Where the large black one is located, I could never get a good look at it, be it required me to stretch out her arm, which she wasn't having.
