Just seeing if anyone has had experience with their squirrels having blood shot eyes.
If so did you find out what caused it?
Is this a common side effect of any known illness?
Is yes to either how did you treat?
Have passed this by a couple rehabbers already who were puzzled by this issue.
thanks

We often have reddish eyes, especially in the inner corner of the eye with odontomas.
Since there is no more info, I don't know if this is appropriate or not.

If it is both of the eyes, this should answer it.

This redness is not caused by blood, but by the secretion of a red pigment called porphyrin. This pigment is released from a gland behind the eye called the Harderian gland. The scientific name for the colored tears is 'chromodacryorrhea.'
I saw this one time when a vet was too rough in examing our squirrel. It went away after a bit. if it stays red then as this article relates the squirrel may have a serious condition.
