I just put 3 of my babies out in their release cage but, this year, the mosquitoes are in full force. It has rained so much, is still so humid out there in my woods, man oh man! these suckers are as big as B-52s! My poor little guys are just being devoured, to the point that they can't stand being out of their nest box for more than 2 minutes it seems. :(

I was wondering if placing a couple of pots of citronella plants on top of their cage might help, at least a lilttle bit. My concern is, what if those get knocked over by some of the other guys or other critter and my boys get to the leaves, or what else... ? Is citronella OK for squirrels, or is it toxic to them? Do you guys have any other suggestions to offer.

Gotta tell ya there is no electricity that far onto my property, so placing a fan to chase them away is out of the question unfortunately.

I'd love to post a little video of them in their release cage but I don't seem to know how...

I don't know the answer, but I think it would be a minimal risk. I would risk putting a citronella plant on top of their cages if the skeeters are that bad. The chances of them tasting a leaf are not high, and we don't know that it would hurt them either. Just my thoughts.

Toxic! http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/no/giving-thumbs-down-smiley-emoticon.gif

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals cautions that all members of the geranium family, Pelargonium, are toxic to dogs.
They contain the active toxins geraniol and linalool.

The citronella plant, also called the mosquito plant, is actually a member of the geranium family. Grown as a mosquito repellent plant this plant
contains the active toxins geraniol and linalool. After eating the plants, squirrels exhibit signs of vomiting, diarrhea and skin rash.

For outside enclosures plagued by mosquitoes I'd recommend wrapping them in aluminum screen.
The screen is very tight and still gives full visibility...
