I'm looking into getting a flying squirrel when I transfer Universities. I'll be an architectural student, so lots of alone time and all nighters that'll allow me time for a flyer. But, I want to take the guy with me during the day. What's the risk here? Will he fly away into nature when I take him outside? Will he spaz out in class and fly all over the room? How can I responsibly approach these situations?
I've seen people take their sugar gliders out during the day with no concerns, are they more attached than flyers? If so, I may consider a glider instead.
Any advice, please! Been worried about this stuff...

:Welcome to TheSquirrelBoard
I think it depends on how bonded you are to your flyer whether he would 'fly' away. I think the risks are equal with flyers and sugar gliders. I'm sure you use the word 'fly' playfully as flyers don't fly and neither do sugar gliders. They glide. They launch from a high vantage point and glide to a lower point. They might not 'fly' away but they can sure run and yes they could run away. A flyer that escapes outside is unlikely to survive as they need to be part of a colony.
I personally have never taken my flyers outside even in a bonding pouch but we have a member (roadrunner) that takes his flyer everywhere. Her name is Marsha Cotton. He hasn't posted about her in a long time. I hope she's doing OK. He has pics of her outside on trees. I would be SCARED to death to do that. Marsha went to college and even went to church. I do remember when she bolted away during the morning service. I would have died right there. :laugh1 :shakehead I guess they had their own Mississippi Squirrel Revival that morning. You're young so you have probably never heard the song. It's hysterical.
Taking them with you is definitely doable as other have done it. Basically they travel in a bonding pouch and can be taken out when desired. They do like to stay on your body but that doesn't mean they won't drop to the floor and run. They will!
I would encourage you to do your homework regarding a flyer OR a sugar glider. Many people get flyers and then their life changes and the flyer doesn't fit anymore. It is very common to see flyers rehomed. Very sad. :shakehead A flyer can live up to 15 years so it is a very long commitment.
Flyers can bond with people just like sugar gliders.

Hm, so I need to ensure that I get a strong bond with my critter. Maybe get him younger? Are there things I should look out for when at the breeders, maybe temperaments that has less of an affinity? I want to make sure Ill do the bonding right so I don't lose the guy, ya know

Well I would only get them from janda exotics, but they currently don't have any babies. Keep up to date w/ them and get one as soon as one pops up, because they go fast.
