well unfortunately, a squirrel was killed on the road out front of my home. ive been watching this one scamper around the last few weeks.. i also believe the baby or babies that made a fuss last night about Lilo being near the nest, belong to the one that was hit. i did check the belly and the nipples seem to have been used for nursing..ive been going over to where the nest is and listening, but no sounds or sign of babies. we think the squirrel was killed around 10 am..im guessing the baby i saw last night was anywhere between 8-10 weeks..i could see its thin little tail.. and it was very vocal when Lilo was near..cannot get to the nest.. but im keeping an eye out when i can.. wondering how long would it take for them to start calling out for mom or start looking for help or food.

I believe it can take a day or two. I know there is a recording of a baby squirrel calling for mom but was wondering if there was a recording of a mom calling for her babies. That might get their attention and let you know they are there. Good luck and thank you for trying to help these little ones. It's very sad mom was killed. :boohoo:boohoo

How high is the nest?

The call the babies make sounds like a very high pitched whistle, which is amazingly loud for the small creature making it. In the absensed of the mother the young, if mature enough (eyes open and mobile to some degree), will come out of the nest on their own looking for her. Sadly in making this attempt, if yet too immature to handle climbing around well, they may fall.
