A couple of years ago I found a baby squirrel, raised her and now she lives in my big tree. I feed her and a few of her friends daily. There's usually at least 3-4 squirrels that show up every day.

In the last week there have been none. The food and treats have not been touched. I don't think anyone would want to hurt them but for not one single squirrel to show up seems odd.

Their nests are still in the tree and I don't know what to do. Has anyone else had this experience?

Thank you, Butter's mom

Have you seen any predators lurking around? A new cat or dog or something? I think sometimes squirrels may move their 'patch' if they see there's danger at their normal spot, it's also possible that your girl has had some babies and has set up a new nest somewhere...that will make her very sensitive to any threats in the vicinity too.

They often will disappear for a few days and then show up like nothing has happened...they don't realise how much we worry! :shakehead

My own experience this spring:

This is a little different than yours, because I still have squirrels come, but I will share it anyway.

I was having a lot of squirrel visitors every morning all winter, then right after Mothers Day, there are distinctly 2-3 that I have not seen at all. I wonder why they left. They were super friendly with me, so their absence is really noticeable. They were here everyday over winter, and then these 3, blip, gone? I have all sorts of thoughts, from awful things, so simply that they moved on, the summer foliage is all out, maybe they were only hanging out with me, because I supported them through the winter? I don't know. I've heard that squirrels move around for all sorts of reasons. Until I know something concrete, I am choosing to believe the best for them. But I do miss them, and I know how you feel.

Actually, this happens very often in my yard. One week squirrels will be everywhere and than suddenly.... GONE! I have no idea why they do this or where they go. They will reappear just as mysteriously as they left. I don't stress over it if no one shows up. I prefer to see them but realize 'squirrels gotta be squirrels' and they sure don't punch my clock. :grin2

Thank you all very much. This is the first time this has happened and of course I think the worst. I have cats and dogs but I've had them all along so nothing new. When Butter was inside she was ok with the pets but I didn't trust them enough to ever leave them alone. One of the dogs she was not ok with and jumped on him any time she got the chance. Poor dog.

And ever since I've put her out she comes when I call her name but will not let me touch her. Kind of hurts my feelings. I'm buying walnuts tomorrow and strawberries maybe they'll come home soon. :Love_Icon
