I'm new and need help. I've called several wildlife rehab centers and left voicemails asking for assistance. I have a young fox squirrel(7-8 weeks old?) mom found dead on road near the nest. I was out in the yard with my dog when my pup found the baby. Luckily I was fast enough to stop my pup from getting a hold of the squirrel. Unfortunately/fortunately (depends on how you look at it) the baby ran for me and climbed up me; grunting and nuzzling. I've tried leaving the baby in a box by the tree...climbed out of the box and followed me. Tried putting the little guy/gal in the tree. He climbed the tree towards the nest and immediately came back down to me. I do not have the means to care for this guy. Fleas/lice are crawling all over this guy. Please help me. I'm hoping to get a call tomorrow morning from someone that can take this baby and release later. For now even a bit of advice on what to do in the meantime would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Putting the baby in a tree or leaving it outside is a death sentence for sure, when you know for a fact that its mom is dead. It cannot survive at that age on its own. Put the baby in a warm, dark, quiet place -- away from the DOG -- and let us see if we can find an active rehabber near you. What county in Michigan do you live in, and what is the nearest big city?

Here is a link to a great rehab center about 25 miles from you. We have a member that has been to this place and just loves the owner. It is highly recommended.

Here is a link to a guide for caring for baby squirrels. It will get you started.

The babe is currently nested in a box with towels inside of a cat carrier. Nearest big city is Grand Rapids. I'm in Kent county. I've called the humane society and was directed to call everyone that I've already reached out to and left messages with. Wildlife rehabilitation center and Lowell farm and wildlife.

Thank you! I did call and leave a voicemail for them just before 7pm.

Ok sounds great, Klompy -- just replace the towels if you can with an old t-shirt or fleece scarf, something without loops. Squirrels' nails get all tangled up in towel loops. Don't worry too much about the fleas -- squirrel fleas are squirrel-specific and won't get on your dog or you. You can gently wipe the baby down with warm water and a mild solution of Dawn detergent if you want to get rid of them -- works great.
I will see what other resources may be available to you -- BRB

A member here took her boys to the Lowell wildlife Center to be released. She really loved the place. We are very careful who we recommend because frankly, you can't trust all wildlife centers to 'do the right thing'. Based on her recommendation, I believe the Lowell place is good. :thumbsup

The Lowell facility sounds like the best....but here are three other options from the Grand Rapids area. I do not know these people so can't really vouch for them the way we can for the Lowell place.

Thank you so much for all the help. Towels have been switched out and baby got a wipe down. Went right back to sleep. :hug
Hopefully will be able to hand this baby over to someone with much more experience tomorrow. I'll do my best until then.

That's about a 3.5 hour drive from my home. Lowell is 30 minutes from my house. I'll give your friend a call in the morning.

Not yet. Actually making the water, sugar, and salt solution right now. Hoping he won't refuse it.

Yikes -- sorry about that! This is like when people ask me if I'm anywhere near Buffalo or Rochester NY, to help a baby squirrel....if "near" can be defined as a 10-hour drive, sure I am :grin2.

It's all good! In all honesty I'm pretty much willing to drive anywhere to give this little guy a chance.

::update:: The babe took to the rehydration solution very well! And I kept up on giving her small doses throughout the night and morning. By midday I got her formula and I did receive a call from Lowell Farm and Wildlife. She is now in the wonderful caring hands of Lowell farm and wildlife! She was becoming more and more alert with every drink and I know she will do great with the team in Lowell. THANK YOU to everyone for the help. :grouphug
I'm still looking for the siblings, but so far no luck.

Wonderful update. MadameLipstick :grin2 took her boys Fenwick and Ludy to Lowell for release. She LOVED those boys. If there had been ANY reservations she would have taken her boys and left. She loved the place and just raved about it.
I'm so happy things worked out. This little one will be well cared for.
Go ahead... admit it... you did get just a little attached to the little one, didn't you? :poke
