Hey everyone, I hope you all are doing well :grin2

I am in need of some good expert advise today:serene

So next weekend I am going to visit my family for the summer and planning on staying there for the summer, of course my little boy "Moby" will be with me there, but this year they have a new edition to the family, A DOG:tap he is a "Shiba Inu" amazing dog, but I am not sure what or how to play this out, Moby always has the run of the house here at home, and I dont want to put him in the cage all day its unfair for him, but I also dont want an incident to happen with the family dog,,,,

Any advise?

He has to be caged or the dog does. That is an accident waiting to happen.

If the dog is anything like dogs I know he will go crazy at the sight of a squirrel jumping around...and even if your little guy Moby is caged he's likely to get quite stressed at the presence of a dog when he's not been used to it.

That's a tough one, does Moby trust anyone else enough to be able to be looked after by them while you're away? I know it would be hard to be separated from him, but better that than what might happen with him and a dog in the same house. :dono

Sheba Inu's are gorgeous dogs. They are of the spitz breed and were originally used for HUNTING SMALL GAME....
This is an accident waiting to happen, I'm sorry to say. :(

One of the best warning threads, yet saddest on the board below.
Everyone thinks it won't happen to them, or they will be
extra cautious to make sure it doesn't.
The only way to prevent this is to NEVER have a squirrel
and a domestic animal in the same house, ever!

I would never put my guy in that situation!

ok guys thank you so much for the good advise, the reason I was looking forward to this beacuse I see some videos online where people have dogs and squirrels and they seem to not only get along but play along in a good manner..

ahhh, I'll have to think of a way to manage this:grouphug

Thanks everyone :grin3

If a squirrel is raised in a household with a dog, you might see that they sometimes get accustomed to each other and are able to co-exist...but you can never be 100% sure that a dog isn't going to revert to instinct and attack (even meaning it 'playfully'). That is always a danger even with animals that have grown up together, there's no way you'll get that level of familiarity with a dog and a squirrel that have just been introduced...it's a recipe for disaster I'm afraid. :(
