Infestation?

A recent release of mine has some weird stuff going on. Each day his tail fur is disappearing more and more, and a bald spot seems to be getting worse above his tail. It seems to be spreading and has "cuts" or looks as if something is burrowing into his skin. The more I part the fur, the more I find. Also, when I picked him up, I found a weird egg/mucous looking ball coming from his anus. It was bumpy, sticky, and a pale yellow ball that slowly turned a deep red color the longer it was exposed to the air. I'm scared it might be eggs of some sort and he has an infestation going on. I've also noticed he has very red "bites" on his belly which I can't get a picture of. I have attached pictures of his predicament-note that I can't get him to keep still as well as I used to because he is more "wild" now. He has been released for 2 weeks total, and he was treated with Revolution about a week ago. His tail fur almost looks singed, and it is only progressing.


What is going on? What do I need to do for him? He is pretty friendly with just me, so I could attempt to dose him if I needed to. I'm very worried about this!

I know nothing of this, but I do know that there is deworming meds you can get at the vet and maybe some flea and tick mess? Better leave this to the experts, thou! Hope he gets better

Is he scratching a lot? If I saw a wild like that I would dose with ivermectin. It looks like sarcoptic mange, but that will itch bad. I am not sure how close you can dose ivermectin to revolution.

As far as the substance that came out of his anus, put in "the story of Oregon Rocky" in search in the upper right corner. About 4-5 posts down there is a picture of something very similar. See what you think. If you think it is the same, there are meds for it.

Hi there, thanks for the responses. I can't seem to find that thread with the pics of the egg looking thing. Can you attach a link? Oh, yes he loves his scratches all over his body...he makes noises whenever I scratch him!

Anyone know if I can give Ivermectin when I gave 2 drops of Revolution 1 week ago?

Anyone else have an idea of what is going on here?

Just kidding I found the thread with the pics of the substance from his anus. No, I don't think it looks the same to me. This was much less and more formed than those pictures. Also a different color. But it does look like some sort of eggs...do I just go ahead and treat him for something like what Rocky had now before it's possibly too late?

I agree with using Ivermectin but can't say what the combination of having both in the bloodstream
at the same time would do. It could be risky, the claim is Revolution stays in the system 30 days.

Well do I just wait to do anything then? Do you think it's mange? What's your take on the cluster?

Is there anything else I should be treating him with early on to hopefully stop whatever is happening? I've been a worried mess over here!! (If you can't tell). I am so afraid this will kill him if it progresses. I don't want him to get worse and I want to do whatever I can to get him better, safely.

Should I give him another drop of kitten/puppy revolution in case it didn't get fully absorbed? I did see a flea scurry across his belly today even though I treated him a week ago...GRRR! Most of it may have gotten on his fur and not on his skin because he wouldn't stop squirming when I was attempting to apply it.

Revolution will not touch it if it is sarcoptic mange or certain types of mites. Please don't give him another dose. The best thing is to get him seen by a vet. Any chance of that?

I would wait at least another week and then dose with ivermectin. You can pick some up at a feed store. There are two ways of buying it. One is liquid and is easier to measure and dose. But is very expensive $50-$60. Dose is 1, ONE, oh yea did I say 1, tiny drop off of the end of the smallest needle and syringe you can find. That ONE drop is put on a pecan in the grooves. I keep a syringe drawn up with ivermectin so if I see a wild that is buggy I can dose a pecan and toss it to them. Ivermectin also treats fleas.

The other is a horse wormer paste and for a horse it is a one dose deal. $15-$18. The paste tends to separate in the tube, and directions say to massage the tube to mix. That might be fine for a horse that will get the whole tube, but for our little squirrel friends, we need to squeeze the entire tube out and thoroughly mix it, then take a RICE GRAIN size piece of the paste and put it on a pecan.

What ever those egg clusters are they badly need to be treated. I would work very hard to get him seen or at least take in the egg clusters and find out what they are. In the meantime get Drontal Plus. It is a med for dogs and cats and is used to treat tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms.

If you use the Ivermectin paste, you'll need to give it to the squirrel 3 times (7-10 days between each dose).

Treat the egg mass first. Can you get 1 pill of Drontal plus? We will dose for you. You are right, this needs to be done.
