As the post suggests, I have a 5 year old southern flying squirrel (born in January 2012) named Neut (short for Neutrina, which is a variation of neutrino, the subatomic particle) who needs a home. I've taken care of her for the past 5 years, but my current job is moving me out west and eventually overseas, so I unfortunately cannot take her with me.

She likes to run around my room and hide in my closet, and sometimes will run up my legs to my shoulders to get a better jumping off point to various parts of my room. She's does pretty well around strangers and will jump to them when she's out of her cage, but when she's in her cage she'll sometimes bite strangers (but never me). She sleeps in the same pouch that she came in as a baby, has a big 36 inch-tall cage from SunCoast Sugar Gliders, and loves running in her quite 1ft tall silent wheel.

It breaks my heart that I'm not able to bring her with me, so I'd like to find her a loving and experienced home where she can be happy and get the attention she deserves. PM me if you have any questions. I don't have a car, but have one available where I could drive to meet you outside of DC.

I'm so sorry you're having to make this decision :hug

The perfect home will come along! Thank you for looking for someone experienced who will give her the care necessary, not just some random person off the street :hug

Hi my name is Mike,
Darlene and I were wondering if we could meet Neut. We had a gray squirrel, Rocky, for 3 years. He suddenly passed away about 4 months ago with what we think was some kind of intestinal blockage. We have been working with 2 different rehabilitators and would love the chance to see if she likes us. We have the room and the time for a her in our home. We are located in Fairfax City and would be able to visit with you and her any day after 2pm. Please let us know if we are the type of parents you are looking for. You can call us if you'd like at 703-591-5798.

Thanks,

Mike and Darlene

Hi Jared,

I too am sorry that you have to rehome your sweet flyer girl. I know that it will be hard for both of you. We would love it if you would post a picture of her.

I am one of the rehabbers that has been working with Mike and Darlene. I also got to meet their Rocky before he left this world too soon. I was and still am impressed at the dedication and love these two devoted parents gave to their 'son'. I highly endorse Mike and Darlene and hope you will consider them in your decision.

Hello Mike and Darlene,

First off, I'm so sorry about your loss of Rocky.

Secondly, my apologies for the delay in my reply after your quick reply to my plea - I didn't get an alert email from your reply. Thank you so much for your consideration! I will give you a call either today or tomorrow to arrange a meetup time. Just to give you a warning, she usually doesn't like strangers when she is in her cage and she likes to hide when out of it, but I think that's because I'm the only person she's consistently seen and have feed her.

Thank you,

Jared

Also, Trysh, thank you for your endorsement!

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately Mike and Darlene are unable to take on a new squirrel at this time, so Neut is still in great need of a new home! I'll be moving in two weeks, so if anyone has and recommendations on rehab centers I could possibly take her to in the case that I can't find her a new home, that'd also be great.

Thanks,

Jared

Hi Jared,

I can offer to take your sweet little flyer and continue looking for an appropriate forever home for her if you get into a bind and can't find someone yourself. I am pretty hooked into the squirrel community and have a lot of contacts. Let me know if it comes to that. Don't want you to get desperate.

I am on the Maryland side of DC.

This an awesome offer Jared. You don't want to take a pet flying squirrel to a rehab center. They aren't set up for that.
Thank you Trysh! :hug

Jarad,
Trysh is an outstanding, well known and respected rehabber and a great all around animal friend. This is an offer I would jump on if a permanent home is not found in time!:great

I'm blown away by the responses I've been getting from this community. I've PM'd Trysh and we will work out a time for us to transfer Neut. I'll report back once she's safely transferred!

Thank you so much,

-Jared

I just got off the phone with Trysh. I will be bringing Neut in to Trysh's care on Sunday! Even though she never asked for it, I'll be making a donation to help with Neut's and current/future squirrels' care. She's really doing amazing work.

Thank you alllll! :peace

Hi Jared,

Lovely to talk to you today. Taking on another persons 'baby' is a huge responsibility and not one I do lightly. I will work with Neut and provide her with what she needs.

AND I WONT FALL IN LOVE WITH HER:grouphug:Love_Icon:grouphug

I was wondering if you have any pictures of her.. How old was she when you got her?

She was born in October 2011, so she was about four months old when I got her in February 2012!
