Backstory:
Found an orphaned squirrel, approx 6 weeks. Been following all instructions for last 2 weeks. Age now 8 weeks. The plan is to release when old enough.
He seems to be thriving, but suddenly developed this large bald patch with lesion. Does this look like mange?
My only other theory is that he injured himself somehow and has been picking at the spot? Do they do this?
No contact with pets, but we have been putting his cage outside on nice days to get him used to it, so it's possible there was interaction with birds or squirrels through the bars.

I read that "rescued" squirrels in my state must be euthanized by law, so taking him to a vet likely isn't an option.

That looks like an injury, not mange. At some point was this a hard lump that then opened up? (abcess)
Unless he has 'crusty' edges to his ears or signs of irritation around his eyes, he most likely does not have mange.
Is there any kind of an opening in the lesion -- perfectly round, for example?
I would clean the area and see if it is oozing any opaque fluid (pus)...he may need antibiotic cream on it.

Update. No oozing pus. But he's quickly developed more patches. His eyes look fine. One of his ears is balding too, though not "crusty".
He's acting happy enough, but it looks painful and I'm worried about him.

He needs oral antibiotics. It could be a systemic infection presenting itself as sores. Kinda like staff in humans presenting itself as boils. If it were mange, I won think that it would spread and be worse around the original/first site. If it doesn't clear up with oral antibiotics, then I would think something else. However, I am only a person with a medical background and have no expertise in squirrels. Wait on a response from someone with more knowledge than me.
