My boy is almost 3, a foxer. Last night I noticed the fur on top of his nose looked like it was standing up. I felt the top of his face sinus area and I think ( not 100 %) one side felt bigger. I am constantly worried about this horrible thing that happens to our kids. I hope I am just overreacting.

Usually a squirrel will stop chewing limbs and other hard objects, their eyes, one or both, begin to get red and watery, their nose is wet or runs. The most telling of all is the tooth or teeth will stop growing and will wear down to the gums and not be visable. My Rocky has odontomas on all four incisors. He has had one tooth removed so far. He is eight years old. I am worried about further surgeries for my precious Rocky. :Love_Icon

Thank you so much for your reply. So far I have not seen any of those things. He chews black walnuts and whole coconuts with no problem and top 2 incisors look good. I sure hope your Ricky won't need another surgery. It's so scary. Thanks again

Rexie, we were once under the impression that black walnuts were really good for squirrels to help keep the teeth filed down.
In my studies on odontoma, I found that chewing ROCK HARD nuts like black walnuts can actually cause odontoma. Anything, even chewing hard nuts, that can torque the tooth germinal tissue at the tooth base can cause odontoma.
Personally, I would limit the black walnuts and give softer in shell nuts. I think an occasional one might be OK but I sure woundn't overdue it on the black walnuts. Just my opinion.

Oh wow , we'll that's not good at all. I only give him 2 a week and a whole coconut twice a month. I do like the dental chewing with these 2 things. If there is any chance it could harm him, I will toss them. What other nuts in Shell would you recommend for dental purpose only. Because I only give the 2 black walnuts a week for dental care
Thanks for your input.
