View Full Version : Montreal Help needed to properly release a baby squirrel 9-10 weeks old
Hi, I took care of a baby squirrel for the last three weeks, I found it on the sidewalk in Montreal on 20th April.
The baby is healthy and growing fast. Just started a few days ago to refuse milk (Esbilac), eating solid food since 29th April.
The baby's weight is 276g (was 130g when I found it). I call him Peter, but I don't know if it's a boy.
Is anybody able to take care of releasing it properly? I leave in an apartment in Montreal, do not have a back yard.
Thank you,
Lumi

There may be some members in your area that can help, but a quick note that we do not recommend starting the many-week-long soft release process until they are a minimum of 14 weeks.
Hi, thank you for answering.
This is what I've been reading about releasing: http://www.orphanedwildlifecare.com/squirrelcare.htm#19
"After baby squirrels are weaned (or nearly weaned at about 8 weeks of age) they need to spend 4 weeks in a large pre- release cage before being released at about 12 – 13 weeks of age. The cage should be as large as you can manage..."
I do not have a cage. It's two days since the baby squirrel is moving free around the apartment, sleeping on the coach, doesn't want to stay in the big box anymore.
This is what I read on http://www.mary.cc/squirrels/tametowild.htm, that the process from 8 to 13 weeks of age consists of:
1. Start to wean the squirrel off human contact. (I do not have where to keep him away from me).
3. Make sure he is around other squirrels. ( There is no other squirrels to teach him what the squirrels do).
4.Start to take him outdoors.
5.Leave his cage outdoors 24 hours a day.
6. Release in a yard.
If anybody ever did this for a squirrel, and is willing to do it again for Peter, please let me know.
Needles to say how much I'm attached to him and wish him to be fine, and to do the best for him.
Thank you,
