I'm new to this forum, actually just joined last night so forgive me if I've missed something. My husband and I rescued two baby fox squirrels and I believe we plan on keeping them as indoor squirrels. They are roughly 10-11 weeks old now. They seem healthy. We're trying to figure out everything they can have. Especially plant and tree wise. I've seen a few of the lists but there's a few things I haven't seen on any lists anywhere, so I'm helping some of you can help me. Also, any general tips you may have would be great. We think they're both girls so we've named them Margaret and Ellinor.
I know they can eat dandelion greens, but can they eat the actual flower as well?
Honey suckles
Mock Orange
Fleabane Daisy

I am not a expert, but I will let you know some things I know. THEY MUST have a proper diet in captivity. Calcium is a MUST. don't give corn, sunflower seeds or peanuts. They are junk and high in phosphorus. They won't eat the healthy stuff if they know you will give junk. Look up the information on metabolic bone disease. It kills captives. The general consensus here on the board is release, especially since keeping them is illegal in most states and veterinary care is sometimes impossible to find. If you do decide to keep your little ones. READ READ READ. They are a huge commitment. Need lots of room , lots of daily interacting. And may wild up even with the most committed care giver. If you can't commit to them 100 percent and adjust to their behavior and needs it would be unfair to them to cage them. If you are up for the long haul being a squirrel parent is the most amazing accomplishment of my lifetime and I would not trade it for anything. Keep in mind too when mature they usually only pick one person in the house and will hate every one else. Just want you guys to be informed and be ready to have bloody scratched up arms alot.. lol .... this board has a wealth of information to learn more about their needs. Let us know what happens with them.
