I have a flying squirrel that has lived inside for all of his life (almost 4 years). My question is: I am wanting to move him and his cage outside. I am planning on putting a tarp over his cage for added protection against the elements but I wanted to know if I do this, would be a good idea or would it make him sick and or kill him? Thanks for helping!!!

I am not a flyer person, but there are several on here that can hopefully answer that question.

Personally I think it would be a mistake after four years but will adjust your tittle
to hopefully get attention of those experienced with flyers...

Edit: I am planning on keeping him in current cage which would not allow any predators in cage. The wire is extremely small squares.

Why are you moving him outdoors? After 4 years of being a pet indoors, that doesn't seem like the best thing for him.

I just thought he might want to be outside and experience the sights and sounds of being outside. Maybe be more in his normal/natural environment. I just want to do whatever is best for him. Do you think the rain/heat/cold would hurt him? Thanks for all of your help!

I personally think the rain/cold/wind might be frightening at this stage if he has never experienced it before. It will also be much harder to ever interact with him. I think he will be confused since he's been an indoor pet all along. IMHO.

. Maybe be more in his normal/natural environment.
Flyers in their "normal" environment (unlike greys) are communal animals and live in colonies.
At this stage in his life his "normal" environment is what you have made it. Putting him out
now at his age would be the same as putting him in isolation and taking away any security
he has known. For him it would be a pretty sad existence in my opinion.
