pimple like bumps on itchy squirrel baby. He seemed to enjoy me scratching at them with a bit of warm water. Could these be lice? If yes, what do I treat them with since he is only about 6-7 weeks old? Nothing seen moving on him, but I am so itchy and fear my dogs and cats will get lice. Little boy is eating well....formula....and even when very hungry, he won't eat the rodent blocks. Mail person did not bring my pkg from Henry's to house when it did not fit in mailbox, so now I have to wait till Mon. To p/u at P.O. Could these bumps, almost scablike, be from all the fleas he had on him when found?
He did have a Dawn bath to rid him of those, along with hand picking them off.

Could be from the fleas? Ant bites?

Are the bumps mainly on his belly and genital area? Could be pyoderma -- a mild staph-related skin infection babies often get. Treat with warm water baths in antibacterial soap.

Other ideas are, as Tube Driver suggested, ant or flea bites. Those I would leave alone unless they get worse-looking.

Could you describe WHERE the bumps are and WHICH formula do you have the baby on, please?

And if possible, please post a pic of the bumps.

Some babies can develop an allergy to formula and it usually appears as pimple like bumps that itch...which is why I am asking about the formula.

How long has the baby been in your care and on formula?

The bumps are only seen when I search through his body and tail hair. They seem
like scabs. Baby boy is on the prescribed formula of Esbilac with pre and probiotics, 1 to 2 water, with the addition of heavy whipping cream. He loves it and took 14 ml at his last feeding. I did not give him any more since I thought it would be too much at one feeding. I am also hoping that he will take to the rodent blocks which are always available (Kaytee). Henry's are waiting for p/u at the P.O. tomorrow, along with other supplies for his cage.
He has a beautiful full coat of fur with no bald spots. Scabs were found because I was going over his body in an effort to check for lice. Nothing falls out over a white cloth.
Bedding is washed and changed often. He has been in my care for one week.

Ant bites are usually on one side of the body...belly, right side, left side or on the back. Ant venom is an anti-coagulant and there is no "cure" for it. They either make it or they don't. The treatment of Clavamox is for secondary infection...the pus in the pimples. This is why I asked WHERE on his body the scabs are...are they all over or are they specific to one area.

Flea and lice will be all over the body. Flea poop will look like blood when introduced to water. A good topical treatment is recommended. Ingestion of fleas can lead to worms...just a word of caution.

Formula allergy usually presents as pimples and they are usually in the groin/belly area. They don't scab over until the formula is changed. In my experience the change from pimples to scab is very quick. Like holy crap that was fast!

I'm afraid without more specific info or pictures this is all the help I'm able to provide.

Best of luck!

Sorry to bother you yet again, but this boy's scratching is continuing. It seems more like an allergic itch, and his scabs I believe, are from the now gone fleas.
I suddenly realized that I had been laundering his fleece blankets in our regular detergent, and then drying them with dryer sheets!!!! All blankets are now being washed again with hot water and white vinegar only. They will be dried with no dryer sheets. I am not putting anything in his cage until these are ready, and every other blanket or towel will catch on his claws. He will have to be a bit uncozy for a while.
I am so hoping that I have found the reason for his constant scratching.
Will let you all know the result.

Sounds good.
Just an aside: my BF and I are very allergic to fake fragrances, so I have always bought everything unscented. I launder the squirrel babies' bedding in All Free & Clear, with sometimes a drop of Dawn in there to get the formula stains off. On the other hand, I am often given shoeboxes with baby squirrels inside from the original finders, wrapped in a towel or blanket that just REEKS of perfume (Tide, for me, is the worst offender). I wonder how in God's name that tiny creature could breathe in there, when my own throat was closing up. It's worth switching to unscented laundry soap when you have rehab babies and, yes, dryer sheets are awful so no more of those! :grin2

We use La Paarisienne unscented laudry detergent for all our squees' blankets and pads here. Works great at removing stains but completely unscented. If you worry about static in the dryer, try putting a ball of foil in there - take a 3 inch long sheet and crumple it in a tight ball and put that in the dryer. It'll prevent the static and costs a lot less than shoe dryer sheets anyway ;)

I have tried to send photos of squirrel baby who has bumps on his body....mainly back and shoulders. He's the boy who scratches a lot. Do not see lice, but this could be mites which are even tinier. Nothing crawling on him. Hair growth seems fine, and this sparely furred spot is there when I made it by looking at his body for anything visibly moving. Nothing found.

Have no idea where the photos went. Thought I had followed the directions. Spots are like the tiny pimples with a white tip, that were described by another member awhile ago. Since his hair is not falling out around the face and in other areas that wereentioned, I do not think it is mange. Have treated bothypes, demotic. And sarcoptic, in rescue dogs. I do think it is mites.
No rehabber in my area that I know of, and do not know of a wildlife savvy veterinarian nearby. I would not want this baby taken away and killed.
