Hello! My boy squirrel who name is Finn recently develop this bump on the side of his head! He is about 8 weeks old. It's the only bump he has and it looks like he has a smaller bump in his ear. He has a sister also and she doesn't have any! Please help! Thank you!

It looks as though it might be an abscess. Can you tell us what the babies diet is? How long have you had him? Is it possible that he was injured?

The baby diet is puppy formula..and introducing fruit like grapes..mangoes..I had him since 1 week old. We found him when they were hairless and pink..he in his cat cage with his sister unless we let them run around. So don't think he injured. He acting normal. Thank you

What kind of formula. A pic of the container would be best,

If it's an abscess, it may have come from a scratch or bite from playing with his sister. If that is what it is, warm compresses will help draw it to a head. If it gets large it may have to be lanced so it can drain. Do you have access to a vet?
The first food you want to introduce to a young squirrel is a good quality rodent block. Henrys makes blocks that are specifically for squirrels, but must be purchased online. There are other brands like Zupreem, Harlan Teklad and Oxbow that you can probably purchase in a pet store.
Please watch it and ask for help if you need it.

Wrong formula! They need to be on POWDERED ESBILAC puppy milk replacer. It has a blue banner at the top of the can that says "with pre and probiotics". I don't know if this has anything to do with the bump, but typically baby squirrels that have been on that liquid formula suffer from diarrhea and failure to thrive.

We did give them rodent block first, don't know if they ate it or not. Should I just give rodent block for now and wait on fruit? But I'll try the warm compressed and keep an eye on him and my vet that I take my dog too..I have a good relationship with him so if I need anything I can call him. Thank you so much!!

Where can I get that? Pet store?

Yes, stop the fruit for now. They need to be eating rodent block faithfully before they start anything else and then when they do it should be greens.
The formula definitely needs to be changed to the powdered Esbilac.

Tractor Supply often carries this as well as large pet stores (PetCo, PetSmart). And on-line

Edit: You will see a big difference in how well they do with a formula more in line with needs of a squirrel! :thumbsup

That looks right, but I don't see the blue banner across the top of the can. Look at the ingredients. Is the third ingredient "dried whey protein"?

That's it then. The powder gets mixed 2 parts water to 1 part powder formula. Mix it well and ideally let it sit in the fridge for a few hours before feeding. Mix it well again just prior to feeding.
Watch the bump and see if it increases in size. If so, let us know.
