View Full Version : Please Help! Don't know what's wrong with 1 of 3 of my 5 week old babies he won't eat
So I rescued three squirrels when they were about 2-3 weeks old and before I discovered TSB I went off another website that said any kitten milk replacement would work fine so after I got them warm and fed them water/pedialyte to get them rehydrated, I started feeding them Hartz KMR but quickly stopped after about a day when I noticed they had diarrhea and I saw on here and Henry's website that KMR was bad news. I then flushed their system with pedialyte and have been feeding them esbilac with probiotics mixed 1:2 with hot water as it says on the label as well as 3mL of heavy whipping cream mixed for all three of them and they have all loved the formula and ate very well every day especially one that I named Trail. They have all been gaining weight well and acting normal and peeing and pooping when stimulated. I believe they are around 5 weeks old now because they just opened their eyes two days ago and I noticed that as soon as Trail opened his eyes he lost interest in the formula and for the past two days he seems to be getting very weak and uncomfortable. I don't think it's anything to do with the formula because the other two guys go crazy for their warm formula every 3-4 hours. They grab the syringe and gulp it down like they haven't eaten in days. Trail shows no interest and sometimes has trouble even opening his eyes. I have to feed him super slow by just putting a drop or two in his mouth and waiting for him to swallow. Sometimes it will just dribble out of his mouth but I have been getting at least 3-4mL in him every feeding. I am very worried and have also noticed that he is not growing and developing anywhere close to how the other two are. He is barely gaining weight and is not hopping/crawling around as much as the other two. Also, his poop changed from being well formed yellow pellets to lighter gooey almost creamlike poop. I have some pictures of his poo and of him and comparing him to his brother Watson who is almost 15 g's heavier and just looks so much more healthy and developed than poor little Trail. I don't know what's wrong and it's really starting to freak me out 😔 Should I stop the formula? I don't think he's dehydrated because the skin test looks normal. I do remember seeing that KMR can lead to MBD so that scares me but it just doesn't make sense to me that 2 babies are thriving, gaining weight, and getting more and more energy, yet Trail is acting like this even though I have done the same exact things for all 3 of them. Please help!!! any ideas are greatly appreciated as well as any other tips of what to do for them in the first week of their eyes being open. I ordered the Hi Protein Henry's blocks and they should be here by tomorrow so I will start feeding them that as well as bits of avocado's. I also plan to move them from their plastic tub they are in now to a bigger aqauarium because it seems like they are moving around a lot more and using their legs and feet to climb more. Is there anything I can put in his food to try to make him more interested?
Thanks in advance, Fuzz (new member)

How is Trail's breathing? Has he ever aspirated? (formula come out of nose)
Do you have a weight on him?
He does look undernourished compared to the others but his poo looks remnant
of over feeding.:dono
The KMR really messes with their gut flora! Diarrhea causes dehydration and with
dehydration they can not process their food properly. I would offer him hydration
in between his feeding schedule and for him eliminate the whipping cream in his
formula.
Please check his breathing, hold his belly to your ear like a phone and see if you can
hear any clicking however slight with inhale and exhale.

He looks like he is being nursed on too. He is too weak to fight them off. Please be sure to separate them as soon as possible if the others are nursing his penis. It looks very red like he has diaper rash.

Do you have a weight on him and how much have you been feeding, how often?
In addition to the above questions as those are the most important, is the color correct on the second pic. He looks red on the belly. Is that a true color? Also, it might be because he is so tiny, the proportions look exaggerated... have the siblings been nursing on his 'winky'? :embar We see that often. He is urinating normally, right?
Do you have the babies on a LOW heating pad under half of the container?
Just a thought, he might not be able to tolerate the cream. How much formula are you adding the 3mls of cream to?

His breathing is good and I have been very careful feeding to make sure he doesn't aspirate which he hasn't done in the past (like I said he was one of the best eaters and would always pee and poo for me until a few days ago when he opened his eyes) I was worried about the KMR but they had such little amount and I flushed them with pedialyte after and since they ate the esbilac and peed and pooped for me I thought everything would be alright. I believe the last time I weighed him was this morning and he was at 63g's while his two brothers were right around 75-80g's but thank you I will eliminate the whipping cream and see if he will drink some pedialyte for me. Oh and I separated him from the other two as soon as he started acting like this because I saw them pushing him and running all over/around him.
Thanks so much please let me know if you think of anything else

Besides eliminating the whipping cream make sure his formula is staying hot enough for him.
I have found some babies do like it hotter while other's maybe a bit cooler.
63 grams @ 5% would be 3.1 cc's formula, I would not go beyond the 5% for now.
If he has been suckled on watch for swelling and make sure he is eliminating his urine
without difficulty.
