View Full Version : Somethings going on with Peepers

I gave Peeps his morning nut around 6:30 this morning. He came back home this evening around 6:30 after being gone for the day. He got a big drink from the bowl on top of the release cage and we thought it was a wild because when we walked over to him he didn't come to us and wasn't interested in a nut. His fur looked disheveled and his eyes didn't look good, almost tired. He climbed the tree and went into one of the nest boxes. Because his appearance and demeanor seemed so odd we removed the nest box from the tree and mounted it inside the RC while he was inside. When we opened it up he looked at us, took a hazelnut, but didn't come out. I have yet to be able to closely observe him. I hope after getting a good nights sleep tonight he will come out tomorrow morning and I can see how he's doing? Nibbs came home and seemed distressed that Peeps was in the RC, but went up the tree to the other box for the night.
I didn't see any visible wounds on Peeps but he was moving slowly and not jumping. I wonder if he fell into the neighbors pool and had a tough time getting out. I will update tomorrow.

Oh NO! Poor little Peeps. :(
I wonder if he got in a tussle with a wild squirrel?
Do you think you could dose ibuprofen? He may be sore if
he took a fall.
Fluffer looked the same way when he got in a fight with a female.
He moved SO slow and had no interest in anything.
He got a terrible wound on his head and ear.
Get well soon little Peeps. :Love_Icon
This is shortly after Fluffer came back inside.
He looked SO defeated. :(

Thank you, Nancy. That's about how Peeps looked...defeated and tired. When we opened the box Peeps was in the lower level and no easy way to get him out. He wouldn't come to us and I didn't think it was wise to try and grab him. So, no I didn't dose with ibuprofen, but I do have it and will dose tomorrow if he doesn't seem better. I hope he will come out of his nest box so I can get a better look at him.
How did you know Fluffer was beat up by a female? :eek. I was in and out all day today, both the front and backyard. Our windows are open as well. I never heard any unusual chattering nor did I see any chasing going on, but he could have been a couple of houses away, I guess.
Thank you everyone for your prayers. I hope my baby is back to his normal self tomorrow. :grouphug

Mel, Fluffer was in the garage with the door opened. I heard a commotion as it backs up to my family room.
I went running out to the garage and that's when I saw my front yard female attacking him.
Fluffer ran to the backyard up on the deck and under a loveseat cushion.
I ran right passed him without even noticing him.
I shooed the female away, turned around and saw Fluffer hiding. :(
Yeah you were wise not to grab him.
Poor little Peeps. I hope he feels better in the morning.
He may actually be better off in the RC for a few days, unless he seems really antsy,
but I wouldn't push it. (I KNOW you won't)
Fluffer slept a lot for a couple of days after, little Peeps may too.
Many prayers for your special little guy. :hug:Love_Icon:hug

Poor Peepers! As everyone said, I'll be praying that this is nothing serious and that he is back to his old self tomorrow. What a smart boy, though -- he knew to come home to mamma! (Not like cats....they get hurt and they disappear for days :shakehead)

I just checked on Peeps. He appears to have a wound on the back of his neck and possibly another on the underside of his right arm. He was licking and not using his right arm as well as his left. He is still able to climb, but not with a lot of speed. I don't believe either wound is large because the hair is still covering it, no open gapping wound. His eyes do not look bright. I do believe he is in some pain, or at least very stiff. He was doing some teeth chattering when I was in the RC with him, but I don't know if it was because of me or his brother who was on the outside of the RC being concerned.
I have infant ibuprofen 50mg/1.25mL. I don't know his weight but have attached a picture from this morning if someone could estimate his weight for me please.
What is the best way to catch him? Cover him with a blanket and then burrito him? I will have the ibuprofen, diluted Betadine and some ointment ready to address his wounds.

Awe poor little stinker. I will send you the dosing chart in a pm.
I know your squirrels are smaller in Florida, so I am guesstimating
a weight of 300 grams. The dosing for the infant ibuprofen can be dosed
3 times higher than the chart reflects as stated on the chart. So 300 grams is
very conservative.
I would also start him on an antibiotic Cipro/Baytril OR Clavamox/Augmentin
as these wounds could be from a cat and we don't want to take changes.
As far as cleaning him up, I would wait until after he's dosed with a pain reliever.
Teeth chattering happens when they have pain too.
Get the antibitic ready and put it on a pecan half and let it dry.
Then give it to him that way. Same thing with the ibuprophen,
unless he'll take it from a syringe for you.
Give me a minute and I will pm the chart, once I find it.

Poor little guy sounds like he was attacked by something for sure.:( My Lenny had two bites in the same places not long ago and limped a little for a few days too. It always worries me when they limp like that as I know anything that slows them down puts them at a severe disadvantage out there. And I hate seeing them in pain like that. I dosed Lenny with the ibprophen too and it seemed to help. Since you don't know if it might be a cat attack, giving an AB is playing it safe. I'm glad little Peepers has you watching out for him Mel.:hug

I cleaned the wounds and applied silvadene. He's been dosed with ibuprofen and clavamox. He wasn't happy and did some growling but never tried to bite. I've attached some pictures of the wounds on his neck, they definitely look like puncture wounds, but are close together like maybe squirrel nails or teeth. Opinions? The wound under his arm is a cut and its in his armpit area. The last picture is when we were done and I just gave him some loving. He settled right down and didn't try to get away for about 5 mins. I love my boy. :Love_Icon

I'm inclined to think that it might be a bite wound from another squirrel myself, but defiantly painful I'm sure. It looks a lot like the wounds I saw on Lenny when he was having awful territory issues after release. So heartwarming that the little guy trusts you enough to hold him like that while you treat him.:Love_Icon

Thank you everyone for your warm wishes. :grouphug.
Peeps has had two doses of clavamox and two doses of ibuprofen. I can definitely tell when the ibuprofen wears off because he doesn't want to move and he starts chattering his teeth. His arm hurts. Its a gash about a quarter of an inch long on the inside of his front leg. He has gotten a little antsy, but isn't tearing the RC apart so he's staying for a couple more days.
While sitting outside just now we witnessed two females fighting in the oak tree above the RC. They dropped out of the tree TWICE and landed on the RC before we realized what was happening and yelled at them. No injuries. I don't know what's going on with my wilds! :crazy1:crazy1
Discovered an awesome way to hide meds. An unshelled hazelnut can be cracked open and the meat removed and split open gently. The middle of the meat has a hollow circle. I put Peeps meds inside and then used melted coconut oil on the split part and "glued" it back together. I then put it in the fridge for the coconut oil to harden. Worked like a champ. I watched him eat the whole thing.

WOW great way to dose the meds!
Remember that you can dose Peeps at the range of 0.075 - 0.2
for a 300 gram squirrel. He may actually be a little larger, I'm not sure.
BUT if you feel he could use a little more pain reliever, give it to him.
When you release him, will you still be able to dose him the Clavamox?
Poor baby, I hope Peeps feels better really soon.:Love_Icon

I would be able to dose it in a hazelnut, they're his favorite :grin2. I may up his pain med dose a little tomorrow if I think he needs it. He's not putting a lot of weight on his arm and is continually licking it. He wasn't nearly as cooperative when we cleaned it for the second time. He bit my husband pretty hard. :eek Thats when I knew his arm was really sore. :sadness

Yeah we want to keep an eye on that so it doesn't get infected.
He's on Clavamox so that's a good thing.
Glad his favorite nut is one that you can easily slip the meds into.

Peepers is free once again. :dance. He seemed to be getting around fine and is no longer licking and not wanting to use his right leg. The cut on his leg is no longer red or oozing. The wounds on the back of his neck have scabbed over and the fur is laying down better. He was beginning to get very antsy in the RC. He has had 4 doses of clavamox. I will continue the abs as best I can, but he's beginning to get wise to it being hidden in his nut. :tap. One more hurdle crossed with my problem child :shakehead:shakehead
