I need some expert opinions I have what looks like a preemie (with eyes open) very tiny, unclear on his age or weight. I have done a bit of research on a treatment regimen as i was turned away by too vets and rehabbers in my area are full.
Raphael had clicking loud noises Friday, low interest in eating and struggling to breath. I placed him on a decongestant (pediatric)-which makes him drowsy and Bactrim advice from an article i have attached also called Sulfatrim or Septra (sulfamethoxazole 200mg/5ml and trimethoprim 40mg/5ml) taken from the attached article. I have been giving him hot mist treatments for 2 days and eucalyptus to help breath better. The click is alot lighter...but i am confused on how to cut the pill and how much to fill the syringe.

1) I have Bactrim 800 mg 160 pill. How much should i give to a underweight preemie? How many times a day? I have a syringe labeled .1 .2 .3 .4

2) what is the best probiotic easy to buy? and should i give him this now?

WOW he is a tiny one. And SO cute!
How much does he weigh?
You need a scale to feed him the proper amount and when dosing
drugs its imparitive to get he weight as that's how we dose the meds.

The Bactrim is ok, but its a slow acting antibiotic.
The drug of choice for aspiration pneumonia is Cipro (human antibiotic) or Baytril (animal)
OR Clavamox or Augmentin.
What formula are you feeding himi?
What sized syringe.
Has he aspirated.
Get a weight on him so we can help you with feeding amounts and dosing.

I could dose the Bactrim but you will need a weight.
ALSO call around to friends and family for the other antibiotics I mentioned.
Bactrim is too slow, but it's better than nothing for now. When you get the correct
ab. we will switch over.

OK this will take me a minute to write this up.
I will include a photo of the syringe with the proper mark.
This little one is only 28 grams?
I wonder if this is a dwarf squirrel.
Give me a few minutes to write up dosing for Clavamox 625 mg

That drug sounds like it might be clavamox, which is a better choice. Nancy, should be along to dose shortly.

What are you feeding him? And how often? Do you have him in a plastic container with a heating pad set to low under half of the container?

Awesome! :great:great. This little cutie could be a dwarf. I have one and got him when his eyes were open and didn't realize there was such a thing as a dwarf squirrel. He just never seemed to grow much although he wasn't scrawny, just small.

Dosing sent. Any questions let me know.
Not sure if I added this.
Always keep this little one hydrated when on any
meds. Also pedialyte should be given for no more than 24 hours.
You can always hydrate in between feedings with a touch of honey
(just for taste) in warm water.

Are you talking about the Bactrim?
If so, he's fine on going on Clavamox, just stop the Bactrim.

Oh Wow.... did he release well for you? Did ou put whipping cream in his milk?
When i read the age chart he fit a 5 week old... but was much smaller than my 1st one at 3 weeks... odd.

If you do have a dwarf squirrel they are non-releasable, they would not be
able to survive in the wild.
If you ever want to re-home this little I'm up for the road trip! :gigg...just saying.:grin3

As Stepnstone said, dwarfs are non-releasable and come with a multitude of health issues. They are very picky eaters, their joints aren't formed the same as a normal squirrel so they are sorta bumbly when they climb and walk, they don't thermoregulate their body temperature well, so I keep a heating pad under his house all the time. Their tongues are thicker so they don't swallow as well, so aspiration is more common. Joey has had pneumonia several times as well as some gastro intestinal problems. They sleep ALOT and dont live very long. :sadness:sadness. Unfortunately, that's just what you have to accept in loving them.

My guy takes assorted baby food veggies and chicken from a syringe. He also gets ground Henrys blocks and formula. I feed him 4-5 times a day. He does eat sugar snap peas, chicken and a few other things on his own, but not enough to make me feel comfortable letting that be his only source of nutrition.

With all that said, they are incredibly sweet and loving, :Love_Icon but certainly a challenge.

You mentioned whipping cream. No I have always used Fox Valley 20/50 and the Fox Valley Ultraboost. The Ultraboost has extra fat and calories without the diarrhea that can be associated with whipping cream. Joeys formula consists of equal parts powdered Fox a Valley an Ultrboost mixed with 2 parts water, a little Henrys vitamins and a small spoonful of vanilla full fat yogurt. I add a small amount of this mixture to all of his veggies and ground block for feeding.

My little man is a whopping 226gr and he's 18 mths old. He's a southern gray though and they tend to be smaller anyway.
