View Full Version : Dehydrated refusing honey water!!

Night before last my 2 (Nancy helped determine age today and they are 11 days old today) were a bit dehydrated from being in a cardboard box (I rectified it immediately). Yesterday they had their regular formula feedings every 2-3 hrs with honey water in between. The honey water made them not eat quite as much. Skin test looked good on female and just a bit off on the male but I noticed their poop was still a bit dark. Gave formula for breakfast and honey water between next feeding. Again, it affected their regular meals. After their first honey water they basically refused it and only wanted formula. The girl seems to be doing ok other than mixed colored poop at times but the boy is dehydrated. I tried JUST honey water for the last few feedings but he literally wrinkles his nose and only drinks a little. He has stayed the same weight today or maybe lost a tenth of a gram or so. It was time to eat at 8 so I gave him half formula and half water. He didn't eat much. He is urinating but not much this last time and his poop is a combination of a bit yellow and a darker color. The yellow looked "seedy" like he was constipated earlier. He did not poop after his 8 oclock feeding.

It seems like the in between honey water has just thrown them both off completely as far as eating well and now both refuse to drink it.

When I got them at 2 days old I gave them initially sugar/salt water then switched to pedialyte as soon as I could. I transitioned to formula the proper way slowly giving them full strength. Should I switch back to pedialyte only? Thank you

Try the Pedialyte in between the way you are trying with the honey water. Maybe it will be more appealing to him. Just don't go beyond 24 hours with the Pedialyte because of the added sodium, but it should help get him back on the right track! :Love_Icon

So, feed them pedialyte one hour and formula the next hour? Is it ok if they don't eat 5-7% of body weight of formula? That is the trouble I was running into yesterday with the honey water. They were taking both yesterday, but only about half of the 5-7% of honey water and formula. Does that make sense? lol For instance the boy should be eating between 1 g and 1.5 g (roughly). Yesterday he would eat .5-.75 g of honey water one hour then the same amount of formula. Is that ok?

I appreciate the help!

I would feed formula and then 1 1/2 hours later feed hydration. So they are getting formula every 3 hours. Every 2 hours is probably too often for their digestion.

So sorry! I am just now seeing this. I am feeding Ebsilac powdered puppy formula. They are doing MUCH better today, thanks so much for your help! I had to let them go 2 1/2 hours with nothing, then they were more receptive to the honey water (decided to try that first again instead of pedialyte since they decided to turn their nose up at that as well). I was just trying to feed them too often (a side effect of being a grandma lol). I am still doing 1 1/2 hour honey water and 1 1/2 hr watered down formula. I am slowly building the amount of formula to water ratio on the formula feeding as I was afraid full strength would be a bit too much. They looked pitiful! Doesn't take long, does it? They are both gaining weight and look plump again (still sloughing off a bit of dry skin though).

I appreciate the help!!
