Walking dog and found a baby squirrel that blew out of a tall palm. No way to put it back up there. Have him on a low heating pad wrapped in a towel. Nasty bruising to chest/belly as he fell 40 ft onto a sidewalk. I volunteer at a local dog rescue and some helpful folks there said he may not make it bc the bruising signals internal injury, but keeping him warm and safe as we have a raging storm and can't take him anywhere. I'd love some advice. I have pic/video and am trying to attach. Thanks in advance!283639

Please keep him warm on a non shut off heating pad with fleece or soft t-shirts over the pad. No Esbilac with Probiotics until he is warmed and has been hydrated with some homemade Pedialyte... give the pedialyte every 2 hours at 5% of his body weight. Once fully hydrated he can be feed the Esbilac with Probiotics every 3 hours at 5% of body weight.

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup hater water
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt

*cool down, then feed
*keeps in frig for 3 days
*feed with a 1cc syringe

Fairly certain the director of the shelter can care for him tomorrow, but I wanted to help him make it thru the night. Thank you for your help and advice!! Making up some pedialyte

Exactly what the person I spoke with said. Very bad weather right now in your neck of the woods! Keep that little one in fleece, in a plastic container set half on a heating pad that is set on low.

He took 1 cc of the pedialyte from the syringe but it was a clumsy effort for both of us :). I will give him some more in an hour or so. Had a small smear of blood on the blanket near his bottom, but I guess that's not too surprising with his belly bruised.

Text sent!! :) Looks like "Rockie" is a SHE squirrel. Oops! SHE kind of ate 1cc of formula but still hasn't pottied at all even with a wet warm q tip. I'll keep trying when she's fed though. 283644

She really needs to be very hydrated before any formula is given. What kind of formula do you have?

Karla523

Please no formula, Esbilac with Probiotics, until the squirrel has been hydrated over night with the homemade Pedialyte...... I hydrate all my intakes for a minimum of eight hours, longer if needed.

Had to share the last sweet pic of baby in my First Grade Classroom today. Don't worry, she was not allowed near the children, but they did get to observe a feeding while waiting on rescue to pick up. It was an awesome opportunity to teach what to do (and NOT to do) if they see injured wildlife. We have a bunch of little squirrel enthusiasts down here in Florida (... and one who still insists she was a rat lol)

THANKS AGAIN TINA!! ❤️❤️❤️283670

I have little Rockette. Karla gave her that name. The baby is just beautiful! Her lungs are clear and she is hydrated. Karla did a wonderful job! Little Rockette is at work with me and I have all my kids on my own goat milk formula brew. I will alternate pedialyte and formula through today and go to just formula tomorrow. She took 1 1/2 cc of formula an hour ago and she did urinate and poo. She has bruises on her belly but no head or mouth trauma so I wonder if she fell then crawled to the concrete because I would anticipate a blood nose or something if she hit the concrete from as high as she fell.

Tina,
You are more than welcome to call her whatever you'd like. My husband was jokingly calling her "Rockette" (you know... Rockie the Flying Squirrel.... hardee har har... that man and his jokes kill me). It just stuck, but if you prefer something less silly, I will definitely not be offended! She is your baby now :) :Love_Icon

IMO Rockette seems like a very fitting name! What a great job you did Karla! AND what a great learning experience for your young ones! :great:great. Providing them the opportunity to see wildlife up close and learn from it is something they will hopefully remember forever!

I have to :threadjack (sorta) here and just say that when I was in 4th grade (a long time ago) I had the coolest teacher around. He was the Science teacher so we had a classroom full of critters! We had an indigo snake and gopher tortoise (before it was illegal to have them) a bunny, rats and spiders. And the best part was we got to handle ALL of them. Something I will never forget and I will appreciate forever!

Thank you for helping Rockette and providing a wonderful opportunity for your "kids"!

And thank you Tina for taking this little one so that she can have a wonderful life in the trees!
