My sweet Bennie chose me as his new mom when he fell from a tree back in late August 2016. I've nurtured him ever since and he is my baby! I am estimating he is around 5 months old now. I've had him since he was just a couple weeks old. He is in his third cage, since I have increased the size as his activity levels and curiosity grow. I am asked him out at least twice per day for play time and he is with my husband and I when we watch TV and socialize. Lots of chew toys and nesting material to keep him busy and comfortable, but I feel like it may be time to get a larger cage. What are your thoughts on cage size/dimensions? I love him so much and he brings us such joy, I want him to be happy. We have a lovely secluded lot that he plays outside some in the warmer months, but it's been a bit cold and snowy here lately. Thanks for your time!

Depending on amenities and size, you should check with Critter Nation and Ferret Nation. Both make good cages. Some are two or three levels with shelves. All metal to preclude the smell from urine on the wood.
Just a curious question, because of Bennie's age. Does he get along with you and your husband equally good right now; because that's unusual and could change.
How big is your cage now ?

Thanks for rescuing Bennie. I like the CritterNation because the bars are horizontal. It's easier for them to climb with horizontal bars. I have CN doubles but you can add as many units as you desire. Keep in mind if you get it too big it's a pain to take outside for cleaning. A couple times a year I take them outside, clean them with soap/ bleach and the hose. I do wipe cleanings frequently but they do reach a point where they really need thorough cleaning. There are many options for cages. Others will sound in. Some people build their cages. I like the idea of building a cage but I would have to use something other than wood framing because the wood absorbs urine and it can't be cleaned. Eventually, it would reek and you're stuck with the smell.
I know you didn't ask this but we always ask just to make sure. What are you feeding Bennie? Are you following a healthy diet? Diet is critical for squirrels and a healthy diet is the best way to avoid serious health issues.
Taking Bennie outside is risky if you plan to keep him as a pet. One day, he will climb a tree and he won't return. It's pretty common. He could be gone for days or he might return that evening. You just never know. :peace
Welcome again. We're glad you found us. :)

Thank-you for saving this baby! He is fun and happy because he is still a baby. This is very likely not going to continue indefinitely. There are a few cases when it does work out, but you may want to consider giving Bennie the choice of living in the trees and visiting you as a snack bar.
Whether you choose to release or the keep at home, a Critter Nation is a wonderful cage. :w00t

Welcome Kelli! I'm so glad you saved Benny, and it's an amazing experience. About a year ago I found Larry in my yard. Anyways, I was a first time squirrel mom. I found all these great experienced people here, and with their help I was able to raise and release Larry. Everyone here will give you great advice as to diet, environment, and maturity and growth of your baby.
