View Full Version : SQUIRREL BIT BY DOG

I have a 6 month old eastern fox squirrel I rescued as a 3 week old from death by blue jay. She is incredibly sweet and we are very close with her. She lets us cuddle her and she falls asleep in our hands. Our neighbors dog caught her today and bit her. She is alive, there are a couple scratch marks on her neck, but my major concern is that the dog caused her eye to bleed. She can still open it, it seems the bite only made contact with the corner of her eye. Her eye did bleed a bit but it has currently stopped. It seems as though she is going to be ok, my major concern is infection. I don't have a vet around me that I can take her to. Should I try to acquire antibiotics? If so, any ideas on how to get them without taking her into a vet? What type of antibiotics can I give her? Thank you for your help, I feel beyond awful, please no judgement.

I am not an expert but a few things you can do before one clicks in, find out what antibiotics you may have in your closet.
Take some pictures of the area . I guess specifically the eye if there is damage that can be seen. If you need help posting the pictures I can help you.
If you can weigh your squirrel that will help with calculating the dosing by one of the experts.
Most of the time for home care on The Squirrel Board we will use normal antibiotics and dose them very low by the weight of the squirrel. This is of course if you can not get to a qualified Vet.
The picture will help if you can not weigh your squirrel
Keep her warm and hydrated
Thanks for taking good care of your furry friend. You are in very good hands here.
Some one should be on shortly to help you.

What city are you closest to in OR? I will see if anyone is close to you that can help.

Update: She is eating and drinking, and even running around a bit. She keeps wanting to scratch at the eye so I am stopping that behavior. It was looking a little swollen so we did a warm saline compress which she hated and then seemed to enjoy. She's asleep cuddling with me again now.

Okay, it sounds like you have quite a bit of snow there...lol What antibiotics for humans or pets do you have on hand? All you would need is really one tablet and we can help you to figure out how to break it down.

Is this a pet or is it a squirrel who goes outdoors in the wild? How did the dog get her and what kind of dog is it? Some do more damage naturally than others.

Unfortunately I have no antibiotics around the house not even for humans. And yeah we just got a big dump of snow last night

She is our pet squirrel. I told my neighbor not to let their dog in our house when our squirrel was out but they didn't listen. It was a border collie. We've been doing warm saline compresses that have been helping. She had a couple other cuts I cleaned with Chlorhexidine solution.

Is there anything we can give her for pain? She's clearly got some bruising 😢

Do you have any infant ibprophen? You can give that to her but we would need a weight on her to dose it for you.

I can definitely get a weight on her but I don't have infant ibuprofen. Are there any other options? Her eye is looking good, but her cheek is quite swollen. 283162
I've been icing it a bit and the swelling has gone down a little

Poor little girl, I'm sure she's in some pain. You can purchase the infant ibprophen at most stores that sell pain medicine. But other then that, I'm not sure of anything else OTC that you can give her for pain.

hi! Sorry for not giving an update sooner. We have been very focused on making our little girl feel better. So far she is doing so much better! The rehabber you hooked us up with was beyond amazing. We've been using the antibiotics in her eye and that I is healing really well. the swelling on her neck has gone down drastically. We are still giving her Metacam every 24 hours. she's back to some of her old antics of wanting to sit by the window and go upstairs and hang out in our solarium. We cannot thank you enough!!!!

Thank you so much for letting me know how I can donate! I will definitely be sticking around with you all throughout the life of my girl and into the lives of any other squirrel friends I have the good fortune of making. Right now she eats Henry's blocks, kale, carrots, apples, cauliflower, spinach, plus other veggies, (we try to give her an assortment so she doesn't get bored) and some nuts. We try to give her a very well rounded diet and started her on the Henry's Blocks at a young age so she loves them now 😄 Is yogurt something we should give all the time or just when they need it?

As long as it is full-fat yogurt with no artificial sweeteners it is a good treat for whenever you feel like giving it to her. Of course in small amounts as it is a lot of fat, but it is also a good source of calcium.

Awesome! We will give it a try! She also loves chewing on an antler we bought her. My understanding is that is a good source of calcium.
