Hi, I have a girl vaned Flo. I can't remember who I got her from here. She might have been from Montreal. I've had her for a few years now. She was sent to me because her back legs don't work well at all. She's healthy as can be otherwise. The problem is is that her urine stinks bad. Real bad. Not like infection. It smell more like (sorry) a woman who hasn't washed down there in a month. I bathe her a couple times a week and apply diaper rash cream to keep the urine burn away. I'd bathe her more often but she's not tame and it stresses the crap out of her. If she gets too stressed she will attack her own lame legs. For a long time I thought that it smelled if it accumulated on her. But that's not the case after all. The last time I bathed her I had her wrapped up in a towel to dry. She smelled fine again. A few minutes later she reeked again. She had peed. It's the pee itself that smells.
My my question here is why does it smell so bad and how do I resolve this?

Hi SF. First, are you absolutely positively sure she doesn't have a UTI? You might want to put her on a 7-10day course of SMZ_TMP or even Baytril just in case. The reason I say this is that a UTI is generally the cause of stinky urine, regardless of the particular odor involved.
Or: your girl may be in heat? It is that time of year -- but if she's had this problem all along that wouldn't be the reason.
OR: she's just 'one of those'. I say this because a few seasons ago I had a gorgeous, fat little black baby girl squirrel whose pee stunk to high heaven. And I mean since she was 3 weeks old it stunk. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me...antibiotics did nothing....she grew gorgeous and was released with her siblings. :dono :dono

She's had stinky urine for years. I just thought the smell was because she pees on herself because of her lame legs. I just recently figured out that is not the source of the smell but the pee itself. She was recently on antibiotics for urine burn. That's all cleared up and has been for a while. She's not in heat. No swelling in that area and no vocalizing as if in heat. She seems perfectly healthy except for her lame legs and smelliness. Is she just a stinky girl?

I have a friend that commented on the smell of her squirrels urine for years. Every time we talked it was mentioned and discussed and different things were tried. Nothing ever changed anything. The squirrel does have some paralysis issues.
Then one day the squirrel needed to take antibiotics for something...BAM! The smelly urine went away!
...food for thought.

One problem is is that since her last urine burn I keep her in my bedroom so I can keep a closer eye on her. My room space is reserved for babies, the sick or those that need to be kept a close eye on. When Flo gets stinky my husband jokingly blames me for the smell. "Sure it's the squirrel. Mmmm hmmmmm."
Maybe some Summers Eve would help? Haha!:grin2
not for me. Flo

I think Baytril, but I will send off a message to see if I can get a confirmation.

Baytril is the one she was on last for the urine burn and infected outer vagina. That cleared up a few months ago. She smelled the same way before and after the antibiotics.

I was wrong, the squirrel was on Clavamox. I just got confirmation.

Not sure why it ended up upside down. Can someone fix that for me? It took me half an hour of trying to just get that one.
Anyhow. That's my stinky little girl. She's feisty and stinky but she's cute!

Fixed!
Thanks!!!
The go to drug for UTI here is SMZ-TMP. A 5 to 7 day course couldn't hurt. Flo is a pretty girl!

Awww, she's very pretty.
I spoke with the squirrel mom that I was referring to earlier. The squirrel had stinky urine for a tad more than 3 years and no one could figure it out. The squirrel was given Clavamox to help with a potential oral infection (no one was worrying about the urine anymore) it was quickly noted that the odor of the urine went away and it has not been back since.
As stated before this squirrel does have paralysis issues and virtually no bladder control (meaning she is more than likely not fully depleting her bladder).
I wish you the best with your little beauty. :grouphug

She's beautiful--reminds me of Sweeper's Poppy. My paralyzed boy Scooter will occasionally get a case of "the stinks" last time he went to the vet he had a mild UTI. Mind you, no smell THEN. She gave him sulfatrim oral suspension. Scooter gets a bath every other/few days. His poor boy parts get scalded if not--and he gets drag sores. I make sure his bladder is empty when I get him out of the tub. When I bathe him, I don't physically "wash him". I run a shallow tub of water, add salt or colloidal oatmeal, plop him in and let him scoot around in the tub. When the water starts to cool, I pull the plug, scoop him up in his towel and while he's swaddled, he gets dried, slathered in Dermagel, and his bladder checked. Your girl isn't as--um--forgiving, as Scooter is, but if she absolutely has to take a bath, a nice towel between you and choppers can sure reduce potential carnage. Scooter knows when we head for the bathroom that he's headed to the tub. He is NOT happy. The hardest part is plopping him into the tub. Just gotta take up anything he can sink his claws into so he can be picked up and plopped in one fluid move. If he holds on with his little razors, whatever he's holding on to is going in the tub with him. I'm glad I saw your thread. I need to check and see if I have SMZ--as that appears to be the choice for UTIs. Learn stuff every day on TSB.

Our our bathing routines are very similar. I do the low water thing too. I'll put the dawn dish soap on her bottom and wash a little. I can't hold her unless she's in a towel. She takes everything she can get her little pins on into the tub too.

I don't use any kind of soap--just the salt or coloidal oatmeal. I think the salt really helps. The oatmeal is a new experiment because it has some drying properties and he has sores right now. Scooter will ride with me all over. Once in the bathroom he scoots onto the floor where there are no mats. When he scoots near I pick him up and put him in the pre-run tub. I drain the water completely and drop the towel right on him so I can scoop him up. Swaddled I can get his legs and parts where I can work on them. Scooter has never bit me. He has no problem telling me what he thinks tho :grin3

Increasing her urine output/diluting her urine might help with the smell. Get her to drink more fluid or feed her a little more substances that contain a high water content.
