Hi all, I was suprised with alittle baby eastern grey this evening, i believe she is 2-3 weeks old. Started her on pedilyte this evening. Shes taking about 1.5- 2cc every 2 hours. First couple of feeding she wouldnt pee, but did poop. About the fourth feeding, she peed alot..Pooped alittle.
Ive read so much about how long to hydrate her, then start the puppy milk. Seems everyone does it different. Ive read not to mix pedilyte w milk, and some do. Suggestions on that?
Her next feeding, if i dont hear otherwise, im gonna start half cc milk w 2.5cc pedilyte, then every feeding after that increase milk by half cc and reduce pedilyte by half cc.
Shes drinking good.
I rescued another female baby in 2012, raised her til she was several months old. Then i took her to a rehabilatation place where they introduced her to the wild, and at her pace she could come back or stay in the wild. Broke my heart to let her go. So im alittle rusty on baby squirells now. But im determined. Ty for allowing me on the Board:serene ill post a pic soon

Stop mixing pedialyte with formula. JUST use water and the formula powder. You can slip hydration feedings IN BETWEEN your formula feedings - like if you feed every 2 hours, an hour after a feeding, give her some hydration. You also may want to make the initial few formula feedings more diluted than normal - 3 to 1 at first, then slowly mix it more concentrated until you get to 2 to 1.

Please double check that you are feeding Powdered Puppy ESBILAC.
Many are getting the PetLac and Esbilac confused, and the little ones
are NOT surviving, or are having major issues on PetLac.

Shes eating it good.
I do remember adding whipping cream the last time i rescued a baby, should i do that again?
Ill start the next feeding w milk and water.
Shes eating about 4-5 cc every 3 hours now. She hasnt pooped since i started the milk. I dont believe shes dehydrated anymore, her skin goes back down quickly.

Don't add cream just yet. How much does she weigh in grams? We recommend feeding 5-7% of their body weight. And just to triple check, you're feeding the POWDERED Esbilac, right? It's different from the canned liquid stuff. Personally, I"d continue hydrating with slightly sweetened water until I get some good poops and a few good pees.

I dont have a scale. Yes, it is the powered.
She is peeing good...When i first started feeding her pedilyte last night, she was pooping dark brown tiny pellets, im guessing from the moms milk.
Ive fed her 4 feeding w milk diluted now.

Well thankfully she doesn't look too dehydrated or malnourished, so that is good. Perhaps she wasn't away from mama too long. Only give the pedialyte for 24 hours. You really need to get a gram scale so you can make sure you are feeding her the right amount. Underfeeding can cause malnourishment and over feeding can cause digestive issues. You want to be feeding her 5% to 7% of her body weight per feeding. Also, what are you using to feed her? A 1ml or 3ml needless syringe is what you need to be using to properly control the flow of the formula so that she won't aspirate while feeding which can quickly lead to pneumonia.
She is so cute by the way.:Love_Icon Oh, and welcome to TSB Peachsmom!:Welcome

I just tried to feed her 2cc milk- 1 cc water. She had nothing to do w it, do I go back to the ped. and milk??? I'm using 1cc and 3 cc syringes. She did pee for me, no poop yet since started the milk this morning at 1:30 am.

No, no.

Mix the esbilac like this:

Mix ONE part esbilac powder with TWO parts very warm water and stir, stir, stir. I usually mix up enough for an enite day and keep it in the fridge, taking out just what is needed for each feeding to warm up.

If you are just transitioning from hydration to feeding, mix a batch at THREE parts water to ONE part powder. Feed that for a couple feedings, then mix up a new batch that is 2.5 parts water to 1 part powder and feed that for a couple feedings, then mix it at the full strength of ONE part powder to TWO parts water..

They sometimes balk at eating the 3:1 formula - just because it tastes weak I guess. They normally get a little gusto once it gets closer to full strength.

I just fed her 3cc of 2 parts milk, 1 part ped. Drank it w no problem. I think shes liking the sweetness of ped. so how do i get her to like the water? Shes peeing great, still no poop. I will try 3 to 1 next at 6pm.

lennysmom
10-29-2016, 04:09 PM
Are you mixing the pedialyte with the formula? The two should never be given together. Formula should only be mixed with water as a liquid and not pedialyte. The pedialyte can be fed between formula feedings if you feel she still needs some extra hydration, but only for 24 hours and no more. If she won't take the formula mixed with just water, you can try adding a little full fat yogurt to the water and formula mix.

Peachesmom
10-29-2016, 06:52 PM
Yes, I was mixing them together. I made up some milk..3parts water..1 part powder...She does not like it. I may have gotton her to take 2 cc, but thats it. She peed real well.
If I add yogart..How much? I used the big side of the scoop that comes with the milk..Added 3 of the same scoop of water, how much yogart would i put in that?

Peachesmom

Just fed her..She may have taken 3 cc....Peed good. She pooped 1 little dark brown rice size. After her being on pedilyte, then starting the milk...How long will it take her poop to become orange?
Headed to go get a scale....

You could put one of the little side of the scoop in the formula mix of yogurt. Since you have been hydrating her for awhile, try the 2:1 with two of the big scoops of water, and one big scoop of formula, and 1 small scoop of yogurt. Hopefully she will take that.

As long as it doesn't have chunks of fruit in it, it will probably be ok. If she weighs 78g, you want to be feeding her around 5mL per feeding. If she seems to want more, you can go up to 6mL, but at this point I would not feed her anymore then that at one time. I would try to feed her every 4 to 5 hours at this age. Hope she will take the formula with the yogurt better.

Peachesmom

I dont remember it being this difficult the last time I raised a baby.
She was not impressed w the yogurt at all. I made the milk 2-1 just like you said, added the small scoop of yogurt. Maybe im feeding her to often...every 3 hours...at 11pm, she barely ate 3cc.
So I need to feed her every 4-5 hours instead if 3? Feeding her like I have, shes not looking for food or acting hungry.
So Ill feed next at 3am, thats 4 hours, hopefully she will act hungry.
Alittle more info on her....hubby said she was away from her mom maybe 3 and a half hours, and he kept her warm til I got her.
How long do I keep adding the yogurt?
Thank you so very much for helping me...

lennysmom
10-30-2016, 12:38 AM
If she likes the yogurt, you can continue to add it as long as you like. For my picky babies, I continue to use the yogurt until they are weaned. Yes, try every 4 hrs and see if she will feel more hungry then.

Does she act like she wants more food than that at a feeding? My little one, who weighs 83gr, will take 6ml at some of his feedings. I have had him a week and his eyes were open when I got him, so he's over 5 weeks. He is just very small, I guess. At 100gr she could take up to 7ml and be at the 7% limit.

Not sure if you saw stepnstone's question.
Are you mixing her formula up fresh daily and letting

What do you mean by SAME JAR?

Its in a can....I was making just one scoop powder to 2 scoops water. What she didnt eat out of it, i put in the fridge. Next feeding, i warm water in microwave, set little bowl of milk on top to get warm...I have made fresh and fed it to her.

To answer about the amount, we'd have to now what she weighs now?

If I am right that she is about 5 weeks old, I would be feeding every 4 hours; I don't pull back to every 5 hours until about 6 or 7 weeks. And that depends on how healthy and how they are progressing... some may need a little catching up!

Ok, if she weighs 125g, you would take 125 and multiply it by .07 on a calculator to come up with the amount in mL (cc) to feed her, which in this case would be 8.75. But actually 7cc is just over 6% and the rule of thumb for feeding is 5% to 7%, so that is good. If she still seems hungry after 7cc, you could feed a little more, but I would not go over the 7% at her age.

Mel1959
11-07-2016, 11:14 PM
Try to weigh her first thing in the morning before feeding. Then you will know the min. and max. to offer her for the day.

To calculate how much she should be eating:

Take her weight. 125
Multiply it by 5%. x .05
----------
6.25
And then by 7%.

125
x .07
--------
8.75

So between 6.25 ml and 8.75 ml at each feeding. Always check the belly to be sure it's not hard. You don't want them bloated. Increase the amount gradually.

Perfectly normal that she is cautious now.

I have a couple questions..
I read after their eyes open, we dont have to stimulate them to potty??
Also, how long do i leave the heating pad under her?
Shes right at 130 g...Shes eating 7cc every 5 hours..Do i need to feed her more?

lennysmom
11-08-2016, 10:29 PM
You do not have to continue to stimulate if you see her going on her own in her bin. Until then, I still would.. it also helps keep the bin a little cleaner.:tilt As far as the heat goes, if she consistently moves off the heat source, then it's a good indication she doesn't need it anymore. I only put the heat under half of the bin so they can move off if they get too warm. 7cc is ok at 130g - if she still seems hungry, you can even bump it up to 8 or 9cc, but I wouldn't feed much more then that at this point.

You can also get some chew toys for small rodents at the pet store - my babies love apple sticks and the little chew blocks they sell. Or, to save money you can even give her some small clean branches to chew on. Just make sure if you go that route, that you choose a "safe tree" off the list found here on this healthy diet chart: http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?44440-Healthy-Diet-for-Pet-Squirrels
