Late last night a friend brought me an eastern grey male who looks to be about 5-6 weeks old. He's very skinny and reluctant to eat, but he's a little fighter. As much as I wish I could rehab him myself, I just can't take him beyond this weekend due to my work and school schedules (not to mention my Pascal - who is now 4 y/o - is spoiled and not thrilled with me giving more attention to someone else lol). Is there anyone in the Brandon (FL) area that could take him? If not, I do know of a vet that will take squirrels but it makes me a little uneasy as they are not specifically a wildlife rehab.

I sent her a text. Are you north of 60 or south of 60?
She just replied back. Give her a few minutes to log on.

I'm just south of 60 and am absolutely willing to go to her or meet her somewhere.

Hi there!
H4S directed me to your thread.
Can you post a picture of your little guy?
I've been looking for a sibling for my ~4 week old boy. I MUST be able to raise them together, though. I'm out of cages! I have a single who will go in the RC next w/e. I have two other sets of 2, and the single baby. I'm a very small-time rehabber so 6 squirrels feels like 16! But I love them all & they're probably a little spoiled.
Please don't take him to either ER vet on Lumsden! :eek
I will try to take him and if the two babies don't get along I'll find another good home for him.
You can also PM me if you'd like.
Thanks!

Oh my goodness! What a sweetie! :Love_Icon
My guy is about the same size but a little younger. They look like they'd be compatible! :glomp
We're going to give it a shot but I can't take him til Monday. We may be looking for a squirrel sitter for tomorrow! Anyone? :grin2

I'm taking this little guy shortly.
I have a few questions--
He is super underweight. He's gone from whole milk (cow) by the finders to kitten formula by the sweet young lady who took him in. (It's all she could find)
How should I transition him to FV? He desperately needs the calories but I know I can't just switch him to full strength FV. I have Ultraboost. How often should I feed considering how underweight he is?
Help, please!
He started AB's / cephalexin/ for AP. Is this the best AB? I'd also like to check his dose
when I get home and get his weight.
Also, guessing he needs probiotics, I don't think yogurt is a good idea yet.
He has some loose stool, not surprising considering his diet. Should I go ahead and add some pumpkin to his formula?
Last thing (for now). Is it safe to go ahead and put him in with my baby? I would love to, I think the companionship would be good for both of them. But I don't want to risk my healthy baby getting sick.
No proofreading, sorry for any typos or weird autocorrects!! :-)

Chris, I would flush him with hydration fluid for a few hours and then start dilute FV (3:1). He really needs some nutrition soon.
The Cephelexin isn't a good choice. Do you have Cipro or SMZ? I have some if you need it. I'll be home around 4:30.
I would not put this baby with your healthy boy. TOO soon.

I would do as Patti suggested as far as flushing and the 1 part FV to 3 parts water.
With probiotics, get the human kind you can pull apart. Give those
2 hours prior or after dosing antibiotics.
This is what I use, they have a sort of sweet taste and the squirrel
take it with NO problem, either in a little honey water or sprinkled
on something they will eat.

Feeding.
I would feed him smaller amounts at each feeding and more frequently.
I had some that were terribly skinny when they arrived, you could see
their hip bones and all of their ribs.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Magentas-Babies/i-X77L5wC/0/S/CaptureMB-S.jpg
I did roughly every 2-3 hours or so, limiting what they may want to take
because they bloated if I pushed it to 5%. If you can do every 2-3 hours
then slowly work up, and then you can extend the time between feedings.
It only took a couple of days to get them almost where they should be/back on track.
Just go slow and steady.
Thank YOU for helping this little one. :hug:Love_Icon:hug

DON'T panic.
What was the amount you gave him.
Try to get some honey water into him, and stimulate.
That may help to get it out faster.
Just pm'd you my phone number.

I gave him about 2 drops. Just realized I probably didn't shake it enough and the meds are at the bottom, so I don't think he got very much.
I gave him homemade rehydration fluid and had to stop him at 4cc. He's very hungry.
Unfortunately what went in has not come out, despite a lot of stimulation. He's a fighter--he took to the miracle nipple like a champ and fought like heck when I was trying to potty him.
He's sleeping next to me in a bin now.
Reply to H4S-- Yes, I believe I have both of those AB's. Need dosing though, please.

OK, Ms Patty Cake :blowkiss
He's quite full of rehydration fluid and sleeping.
3 to 1 formula, small amounts, ~every 2-3 hours
Would a little UltraBoost help?
I have Cipro and SMZ but need dosing.
Weight: 57 grams
Thanks!
Can we consolidate this to one thread, preferably mine re: AP help needed? I don't want to miss anything important.
:thankyou You guys are the best, you are ALWAYS here to help!! And talk me down from the ledge when I'm panicking! :grouphug :hug :grouphug

He's still clicking, wheezing, and doing the guppy mouthed breathing. His breathing is just labored, period. His little sides are heaving every time he takes a breath.
I need to get a different AB on board quickly, I think.
He weighs 57 grams.
Thank you

Just got back on.
What abs do you have and what is the mg of them.
I'm going to start writing this up now for 250 mg. Cipro
just in case that's what you have.

I just sent you dosing for a 250 mg pill.
IF your pill is 500 mg. add 22 mLs of water to
it instead, and dose the amount I gave you in the pm.
I will now give you the daily dose as I only sent
you the "loading dose" number.

Do you have a humidifier, and does anyone
else think this may be useful to help this little one?

I have a nebulizer. I'll be home at 4:30. Leaving work now.

Nebulizer would be FABULOUS but I really do think vaporizers should be on the standard equipment list for anybody with babies.

We live in SW FL, so I don't have a humidifier, lol
I do have a nebulizer as the kids and I have asthma. I'm not sure how to use it w/o meds. Just add water the way you'd normally add meds?
Put the mask in front of his face?
Thank you, great idea!!:hug
