View Full Version : I think it's a broken toe, making pre-existing balance issues worse..

So Mihku, my little 8-9 w/o hellion, seems to have fractured his toe during playtime.. I have no idea how, as I did my best to squirrel proof my room, but who knows. He has always been kinda twitchy to start, and I'm worried his punchy paw is interfering with his mobility. He's running around fine, unless the one swollen toe is messed with, then he squeals and kinda mopes for a bit. Is there a way to make him more comfortable? Should I worry about him being kinda wobbly and twitchy?

I'll get photos soon..

And are his teeth supposed to be so stubby?

Do you have a weight on him. He can be dosed infant ibuprophen, but we dose by weight.
Did you see him catch his toe on something, or did you just find him this way after playtime?
You said he's always been kind of twitchy? :dono
Is there anyway you can get a video.
The top teeth are fine for one this age, they should grow a little bit more
the older he gets.

What is his diet like? What formula are you using?
Is he still taking it.

He looks adorable. :Love_Icon

Squirrels have pacific nutritional requirements that we must meet, your question along with
the suspected broken toe throws a red flag for me and could possibly relate to improper diet.
So lets start here.... http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/hand-gestures/pointing-down-smiley-emoticon.gif tell us everything your feeding him.

He has been of formula for a while because he wouldn't take it, he gets a diet of mazuri rodent blocks in the morning, of which he actually eats about two, and then his diet is supplemented with a mix of hazelnuts and pine nuts. They are his favorites and I figured the pine nuts were a more natural option. I also give him natural sticks from nearby trees with natural lichen and things on them. I couldn't get him to touch any sort of veggies, and I've tried almost everything..

I just checked the room, and there's a torn open bag from when he was you've and I didn't know about peanuts.. He ate all of them.. Last time I was monitoring closely he was getting all his rodent blocks first thing but now I'm not sure.. Should I get him on more calcium? Do you think is MBD?

I don't have any easy to get a weight.. but he's nearly the size of some eastern grays I've seen hanging around.

He's always been kinda slow.. He just seems to not get allot of squirrel things, he rarely vocalizes , has no fear of animals (practically walked into my cats mouth, almost got seriously injured, and still goes for the cats) and he's terrified of the outdoors for the most part. I take him on harnessed photons, and After a while I can get him to kinda climb a tree, but then he just zips back down into my shirt.

The wobbles and twitches come and go, they didn't really seem like seizures.. (at least I hoped)

I don't really have a way to get a weight, but I'll try for video.

His foot seems far less painful this morning, I'm wondering if the injury is old? He's definitely no worse for wear, crazy little dude zooming all over the place.

Please stop feeding him pine nuts. As far as causing metabolic bone disease, pine nuts are one of the worst - their calcium to phosphorus levels are simply awful. Hazelnuts are better, almonds aren't bad.

Well shoot.. I had no idea.. So other than hazelnuts what would be better? I'm going to buy him some squirrel specific food, hopefully that will help.. I guess it's hazelnuts only for now.

I ordered the high-protein baby blocks, are those okay? For now he's eating his mazuri, and I wont feed nuts for a while. I'll pick up some veggies today.

They will be fine. You may have to do some tough love to get him to eat them.
The chart will help you a lot.

If you call them (Leigh) they can/will switch the order to the picky blocks,
I would do this asap.
Since he has already had a lot of nuts in his diet I think he will take
to the picky blocks much better then the baby blocks.

I just bought him delicata squash, baby bok choy, and some iceberg (I'm short on cash with all the mihku related startup expenses) one from each group. He goes CRAZY for the squash, and eats it with more vigor than he even ate nuts. :grin3
