My captive eastern grey Mystique loves eating food from my (pesticide-free) yard. She loves hibiscus, plantain, clovers, wood sorrel, garden rose hips, dandelions, lambs quarter, and purslane. My question is, what can I get from the wild for her to eat in the winter? What do wild squirrels in the Northeastern US eat in the winter besides buried nuts?:fluff1

I think they eat bark, and or the layer just under the bark, but I don't know of what trees, and I don't know for sure. I would love to know this info. I'll be carefully studying the ones in my backyard this year to see if I can find out more.

My variegated tree squirrels---eat coconuts ...but then again--we're in Costa Rica.... Ha!

I've seen them eat tree buds and I read that they also store mushrooms.
