it could just be her intestines moving around. they do move on their own.

her tummy is major bloated . .very weird looking and it is all the time not just after she eats/.. she is ravenous . she is my first squirrel but she is desperate for food all the time.. I posted a while ago about her bloated belly but I didn't get any response I think I was posting in wrong section..

A dark room and a bright penlight might be able to shine straight through, or maybe hold the light at an angle against the skin and visualize that way.. We use this in pediatrics to find veins. I am very concerned that they're atypical parasites like a bot fly or some such, and therefore NOT constrained to the GI tract itself but are loose in the peritoneal cavity.
Please update?

I'm getting almost 16-17 cc;s in her but shes ready to pop when I'm done... if she even slightly rolls onto her back shes like a turtle that cant right itself up shes so fat.... seriously she gets stuck on her back... this is not normal I know the pics are hard to see how big her belly is but its common sense this is not normal sized belly... .. I can try to take better pics ... its tricky as u guys know.lol... when I see movement in her belly she jumps up and folds over like it hurts.. gas? intestines ? worms .. bot flies... oh my gosh .

How old is she and how much does she weigh? You may be over feeding her. How often do you feed her?

Thank you for the clarification. I remember that she is a ground squirrel now.
My gray squirrels are over 300 and will only take their 18 ml's once a day for sure, sometimes twice a day and they drink milk out of the bowl I leave in their cage. Is she eating block and veggies too? May be she's weaning herself off the formula.

Well I'm thinking 335 grams isn't her true weight since she's so bloated...it would freak me out seeing things moving under her skin :thinking maybe because she's so bloated...you can see the internal workings. Does she poop a lot? Are they normal poos? What type of formula are you feeding? Are you giving her any solids? We do have someone with lots of experience with ground squirrels...Fireweed:Love_Icon I will try and email her and see if she can come and check out your thread :great
Thank you for helping her...don't worry either...we may leave but we are never far way :great and there are many people who can help you :grin3

WHEN I Stop at 15-17 cc;s she desperatey tries to get more .. . but she cant even move around shes so huge... I cant feed her more her tummy is ridiculously big.. I'm worried I'm going to damage something with stuffing her with so much formula/ let me take more pics u really need to see how big it is..she waddles around and if she falls over she struggles to get right side up again...seriously will it hurt her to run a course of panacur ??? . I know u guys want to make sure I'm doing the basics right first but I'm pretty sure I have that part down now...
Post more pics, and I'm sorry I can't answer your panacur question.

ok thank you!!.. she poops good I don't know what a lot is tho...lol . they are roundish and some are pointyish but none are soft.. I'm feeding esbilac.. yes solids I'm starting her on few veggies and she eats her blocks. .. she never loses the bloated look even when shes ready for next feeding .. I thought it was bloat to begin with so I did somethicone a couple times and I saw no difference.. she is happy as can be she plays and wrestles with me even in her fattest moments . ...she sleeps on her back I'm not sure if that's normal for squirrels but when I see it moving in her tummy she cringes in her sleep and sometimes folds over like her tummy hurts.... :(

ok let me catch everyone up a little bit . I have just started the veggie thing so not much is given I do give timothy hay cuz I have a lot of it for all the rabbits .. i figured when i told u guys about the hay ud give me a hard time//lol.. that's not on the chart u know...:) . she really likes the oat hay too but feeding her the hay I just kind of did on my own because she is always looking for food and that's what I give to all the bunnies to keep them busy .. they are forages . I guess this baby is too . . .and she has had a shallow tiny bowl of water in her enclosure for a couple weeks now . she drinks that right up I'm constantly filling it up i don't want to put a bigger bowl in there so she doesn't snort up water.

veggies ive started her on small amounts are romaine . snap pea.i didn't want to start her on some of the items in column 1 cuz they give gas like broccoli and cabbage... those always scare me with bunnies so i try to avoid those..esp with her belly so big . ive also tried sweet potatoe. she loves that . and little piece of avocado.. and she gets a 1/4 of a peeled grape after every feeding . .... all of these veggies ive not done at same time ..dif days.. i thought i needed to step up her veggie intake but with this tummy i don't know what will be safe to give and I'm not real sure on how much to feed her to be honest with u... when u guys do veggies can u take a pic of amount u give so i can get an idea... ?

ive also tried rose petal.. cucumber.inners,, and branches and leaves from a mulberry tree.. i washed them realy good and i stuck them in my deep freezer ...didn't think parasites could survive being frozen.. am i wrong ?

Ok, just throwing stuff out here....you're sure she's very young, right? The movement in her belly could definitely not be babies, right?
The thirst and weight gain make me wonder about diabetes. Don't know if this is possible for squirrels, but don't know why it couldn't be.
The ravenous appetite also makes me wonder about pregnancy, but, coupled with the movement makes me wonder also about a tapeworm. Again, don't know if this is possible, but don't know why not.
Do you have access to a vet? Maybe an X-ray and some blood work could answer your questions.

I have the dosing chart for Panacur -- what form of the drug do you have? Need the strength listed on the bottle. I believe this squirrel has a terrible overgrowth of parasites and time is of the essence. We have seen this once or twice before, in a wild squirrel -- hundreds of roundworms inside him, as I remember.
Give me the strength of the Panacur you have and I'll forward the dose to you with several forwards to other admins, just to check my math.

NOT SURE IF IM NOW NOTICING THESE THINGS IN HER BELLY OR IF THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE SINCE IVE DOSED HER WITH PANACUR... SHE IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE SLEEPING AND FIGITING AROUND NONE STOP.. TOOK ME A FEW TO WAKE HER A COUPLE TIMES.. IM VERY CONCERNED... IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO TO HELP HER AT THIS TIME . I CANT JUST WATCH HER SUFFERING . IS SHE IN DANGER OF DYING ANYTIME WITH THESE WORMS??? OR WILL I HAVE SOME WARNING AND TIME TO DO SOMETHING ?? . I SHOULD HAVE WENT WITH MY INSTINCTS WEEKS AGO AND JUST DOSED HER ... NOBODY SEEMED WORRIED WHEN I POSTED ABOUT IT.. JUST LIKE THIS POST IT SEEMED LIKE NOBODY THOUGHT ABOUT WORMS THEY WERE THINKING EVERYTHING ELSE... WHY ? DO SQUIRRELS NOT NORMALLY GET WORMS?? . PRETTY UPSET OVER HERE AND I KNOW IT WILL BE A LONG NIGHT WITH NO BODY TO HELP ME ON THIS .. ..HOW LONG BEFORE WORMS DIE ? . WILL THEY GET WORSE BEFORE THEY GET BETTER? .. HER TUMMY IS EXTREMELY ACTIVE RIGHT NOW . ITS INSANE TO WATCH . IM SO WORRIED..

The Panacur is working, killing the worms. She may have diarrhea after this -- be prepared -- as she ejects the dead ones from her body. I know it is horrible, but this is the only way to rid her of them.
To answer your question, squirrels do not normally get worms, not the way puppies and kittens do. However we have seen, as I mentioned, a couple of cases like this before where a squirrel became overwhelmed by tapeworms or roundworms.

Hi! Looks like you've been getting some great help. I too think it's worms. Hopefully your little one will feel better in no time.
Looks like you are beginning a decent diet for your little one. Good for you with the hay and avoiding too much broccoli cabbage etc. Some ground squirrels are able to digest cruciferous veggies better than others. So go slow (after parasites are gone!), give only tiny pieces, and keep watch. Or avoid altogether. :grin2
Keep up the hay - the more timothy they eat, the better they fare.
I did have a really long post on a couple threads about ground squirrel diet (and care). One or both of them should probably be made a sticky. I just can't find them right now and I'm rushing out the door. When I get home, I'll search for them and send you the info. :great

thank you fireweed! ill take all the info u have on them . please. I'm finding very little info on the internet and most of it just repeats itself.. i never thought about looking up info under research and i should have because ive found a ton of in depth info about rabbits that way unfortunately i had to comb thru a lot of horrible stuff just to get to what i needed... hate that.. ill pm you for ur email address too would be nice to bounce a few things off of you every now and then . thanks !..
so update on Widget she is full of spunk today all kinds of in a good mood.. but still big belly.and struggling with getting enough formula in that belly.. boy that thing must be stretched all out ... . and i haven't found anything weird in her poops yet but i do see the little tidbits in her poops from the worms .which i thought was the hay i am feeding but looks like its this worm thing shedding or whatever they do.. Fireweed so i should give unlimited tim hay ? . just like the bunnies... nice ... so cutest thing ever this morning i hear a high pitched squeak i guess u could call it.. and i sat straight up in bed and thought THAT WASNT A BUNNY.!!!.. so i haul butt out to the bunny/squirrel side of the house . which is way bigger then my side btw.... and widget looks fine but shes right up front in her enclosure alert as can be ears pricked.. and then i see him . one of the Flemish giants got over his xpen and was causing mayhem with the other rabbits ..and Widget was snitching him off...lol. love my little security squirrel .
