We havea red American squirrel the is about4 months old. She was fine earlier today, being her usual rambunctious self, then later in the afternoon she seemed to just want to sleep. Her lungs seem clear, but I do see a bit of a runny nose. The only new thing that happened today wasa digging box. With good sterile dirt and growing birdseed. What do I do?! We are first timers here.

Is it possible that some of the bird seed may have gotten into his sinus cavity and is now causing problems for him, hence the clear nasal drainage? --have you given him any water drink, maybe this will help lossen things up.

How are her teeth? Sometimes too long bottom teeth will cause problems with the sinuses.
Also, welcome to TSB! :Welcome
What's your little one's diet?

She has been drinking, but this morning she is not that active. She just wants to sleep. She usually is up at 8 running around her cage, which is quite large. She eats blocks( a mix I ordered online) but am switching to Henry's( should be arriving today) fresh fruit, she loves peaches, lettuce and treats(a few nuts and treats for rats). Her teeth are:panic good, we give her wood chips and antlers. She is always so busy that we decided to make her a digging box, and she loved it, but now this. I a worried. Sammie is always so full of energy. :(

Check her movement/locomotion for any issues that could point to a fall or injury.
I know you provide antlers but I would actually examine her teeth to make sure (if you have not done that).
On the chance that this is some type of respiratory infection, it would be a good idea to have a Cipro AB pill on hand to use just in case it is needed. We can help with dosing.
Is she peeing and pooping like usual?

I did check all her limbs to see if she was ok and did a check of her teeth as well. They do look ok. I give her water and she drinks, but she seems to want to stay in her home. I don't see a whole lot of her pee and poopings since she has a lot of filling in her cage. We use the natural Kaytee clean and cosy bedding. Do they hibernate? Again, we are first time parents to this beautiful baby and it was a difficult situation when we took her in.

Where do I get this pill?
Ask your family or friends if they have any left over from their prior Rx.

Ok, will ask on the pill. If no luck, where else could I get it? Also, here are some picks of her teeth, they look pretty trim. Sorry for the dirty hands and nails, was cleaning up her cage. I make her cage out of one old armoire and a tv shelves I was gonna trash. So she has lots of room. I hope they all come up. 278600

Check your PMs from some info.
Teeth look Ok, a little long but not long enough to cause real issues at this point. That cage is really nice and large, great job on it.:great
You mentioned her diet earlier. What type of block did she get?

Cipro is a VERY common antibiotic that women in particular may have around, as it is the go to drug for urinary tract infections. Ask your female friends. If someone can give you one, find out the size in milligrams of the pill (their prescription bottle will say).

Update*
I found a vet who treats small animals and we were there waiting to be called in. Sammie's breathing had become more labored, I held her in my hands to reassure her we were there for her when she suddenly stopped breathing. So my Sammie is gone. Still don't know why she went so quickly. I did see a bit of blood on her nose and her blankie. So I am inclined to think it was respiratory. Fortunately it was a quick passing. We are in tears, the three months we had her, were not nearly enough. :sadness:Squirrel:sadness:sadness:squirrel6
