Hi! My husband and I were doing yard work and found a baby squirrel. It's pink but has little whiskers with no other hair. Maybe 5-10 days old. We were hoping the mother would come back so we left it alone. We took it in last night. We got it warm and hydrated with pedialyte. We haven't started with formula yet. I'm concerned he has pneumonia after reading about the clicking noises. He only makes these noises at times such as after feeding and not sure if it's a sucking noise or possible pneumonia. I have emailed several people with no response about rehabbing this baby. Please help me locate someone.
Thanks
Savannah

Hi Savannah! Welcome to TSB. Thank you for saving that little baby.

So you got him warm and hydrated with Pedialyte, that's good! Make sure he's in a tub/container that sits half on and half off a heating pad set on low. Also make sure he has lots of soft fabric (fleece/flannel/soft cotton) under him and around him so that he has a little nest to stay warm in. How often have you and are you feeding him Pedialyte? How long has he been on it? And how much do you give at a time?

You said you haven't started formula...do you already have some? and if so exactly what kind do you have. (some can be dangerous to babies that little)

Does it still have an umbilical cord attached to his belly? Also, have you been stimulating him to go pee/poo?

Can you post a photo so the folks on here can get a better idea of his age and health status??

Give the people here a minute to get on and view your post and do what they can to find you someone. Be patient and refresh your page, and tick to ONE thread only, so it's all in one place. Meanwhile, we'll help you help him until you can find one.

Someone should be along soon to help locate a Rehabber in your area. Keep the baby warm on a heating pad placed half under the container he's in, set on low. If you can locate any antibiotics like Baytril, Clavamox, Cipro or Augmentin that might be helpful in case you need to dose. You only need one pill.

I found this list of rehabbers by state on the board here. See if this helps.

Edit: I assumed Greenville OH, Is that where you are??

When squirrels have pneumonia, they make rhythmic clicking noises and not just while they are eating.

To help you find a wildlife rehabber, please tell us what in what state you are located.

I live in Greenville, South Carolina 29607. Last night we mainly just got him warm and he might have had 2 drops from a syringe. Today I have been feeding him every 2-3 hours but he is only taking a drop or two. No umbilical cord, just a little black spot where it fell off. I did stimulate him to pee and poop and he did one time. His urine was slightly yellow. His skin is no longer tenting and his lips are pink so I think he is hydrated enough for formula. I bought Esbilac this morning along with a smaller nipple. I don't have a 1 cc syringe but have been using a 10 cc syringe so its hard to tell how much he is taking. I would say he has only taken around 5 drops or less today. I'm not sure if this is ideal or what. He is so tiny and I definitely don't want him to aspirate. I did watch a video where a 5-10 day was only taking 1/2 a cc every two hrs so maybe its efficient enough.

Thanks for the recommendations of rehabbers. I have tried contacting a few of the emails listed and got an automatic response that the email "failed permanently" so it must be outdated. I am trying others. Unfortunately I do not have any antibiotics here. Sorry about the multiple post. I thought I was editing them not re posting and then couldn't figure out how to delete the others.

Thanks for all the help! :)

Good luck with the rehabber search. Meanwhile, a 10 ml syringe is not only difficult to read but dangerous for a baby that size. You could order them online but for tonight do you know anyone with pets who may be had a 1 or 3 ml syringe for that? Or if you have an emergency vet clinic that's open all hours you might call them and ask them if they would sell you a 1 ml syringe. Tell them what it's for.

I haven't been doing this long enough to suggest anything else. Hopefully someone else can help.

Most drug stores will give you a 1cc (needle less) syringe if you ask and tell them
you are trying to nurse a sick kitten. Do not say it's for a squirrel.

Thanks. I went to walgreens a couple of weeks ago and the pharmacist behind the counter said all they had was a 3 ml taper tip med syringe. I didn't know you could do that. Thanks! And not mentioning squirrels---I forgot, sorry.

How far are you willing to travel to locate help?

You can call around to family and friends for a single antibiotic pill. If you can find one, and you determine you need it, then we can help you correctly dose it. If they have pneumonia they won't eat well and will decline quickly. Put the baby up to your ear and listen for a rhythmic clicking.

A 1cc is the ideal syringe but even a 3 is far better then a 10...

Savannah did a wonderful job of getting
baby hydrated. Perfect little girl. I've
put Jodi in with my injured flyer and
she snuggled right up.
