Deep open wound on 6/7 week baby. He's getting betadine flushes and oral ABs. I need a list of anything and everything I can use to treat the leg.
MM are you out there??? I have the following on hand:
Derma gel, SSD cream, regular Neosporin.
What else do I need??

What meds do you have him on?

He's on clavamox and tramadol. I don't have him in my custody right now. I'll have him Sunday (I tried for tomorrow but she can't meet me).
I'm calling the Little Rock vet tomorrow to make an appt for Monday.
I have lots of non stick gauze and several rolls of vet wrap. Saline... What store readily sells saline? I have new bottles of saline for eyes. I have some medical tape but I'll get more.

I've asked for better pics. Hopefully I'll get some. Praying he can make it until he sees the vet. I just wanted to make sure I had everything I could possibly need to help clean and dress that wound until he gets medical attention. I want to be as prepared as I can be.

Do we have any idea what caused the wound?

Sara, you can find saline wound wash at pretty much any drugstore. Here's CVS's version: https://www.cvs.com/shop/health-medicine/first-aid/antibiotic-antiseptic/cvs-sterile-saline-wound-wash-prodid-444795. Sure hope this baby makes it into your loving hands!

He's doing it to himself. He was cat caught a couple weeks ago and his back legs are messed up. He's been fine with the legs until yesterday or the day before. That's when he started to chew the one leg.
Let me rephrase part of that. His back legs looked crushed or broken back then. No external injuries to them or open wounds. Now he's a chewing fool.

let me hit myself in the forehead right now. I had a brain fart earlier and my mind was still in hospital mode from work. When MM mentioned saline my mind went to our saline bags we use for IVs. Lol. A couple minutes later I knew what she was talking about. I'm going to blame it on the lack of sleep I've been getting. Thank you Gardentoes. It's on my shopping list for tomorrow!!

Good news, the baby is still alive. His leg and base of his tail are involved. He's been chewing both. She's been flushing with betadine but she can't get bandages to stay on his leg. Is there anything she can do to that leg today until I get him tomorrow??
These are the pics she just sent me.

Awww poor baby :sadness I sure hope he's not having pain...that's causing the chewing :( but you did say they are giving Tramadol :great I would also suggest to stop the betadine flushes and go to the saline ....betadine is good in the beginning...but not for continuous use....that's what I've been taught :dono
Good luck Sara :Love_Icon baby's going to be in great hands :bowdown

I have some pics to give a little bit of history on this little one. He was cat caught, puncture wounds to abdomen and bruised ankles. No bites to the legs at all.

Days later notice the inflammation and bruising...

I wonder if you could make a small cone to prevent him from chewing. Maybe a clear, lightweight plastic like on a report cover.
Here is a pattern for a cone too. You would just need to experiment to get the size right for the little one. You could use bowls, cups etc.. as a pattern to make the curves. :grouphug hope this little one gets better soon!

To wrap a leg...start furthest from the heart, so start at the end of the leg by the foot. Each wrap of the wrap should cover the previous one by half. MAKE SURE IT'S LOOSE! Keep wrapping up the leg and when you get up to the body you'll have to start a figure 8 wrap. Go around the body and opposing hip over the leg, back across and under the injured leg around and over the injured and across and under the opposing. You will actually be making an "8". Then for good measure go around the body one more time and tape it off.
You MUST MAKE SURE IT'S LOOSE. If the wrap is too tight it will cut off the circulation, his toes and foot will swell and it will get cold.
A figure 8 wrap is easy to do, but it does take some practice, and a wiggling patient doesn't help much. If it doesn't work the first time, take a deep breath and try again. It took me a couple tries to get my first one to the point where I was happy with it.
EDIT: Whatever medium you're using as a wrap...cut it down and make it very narrow. It is MUCH easier to work with narrow wrap...you can always add more...if it's to fat/wide to start you'll drive yourself nuts.

I don't know if this would work, but here's something I found on the Henry's site (they have a larger one for squirrels): http://www.henryspets.com/rodent-e-collar/ :Squirrel :Squirrel :Squirrel

After eating a little while ago the baby crawled up to her neck to get some sleep and passed minutes later. Ugh. Little Phoenix has gone home to the rainbow bridge. So heartbreaking

Thanks for the compassionate care and the heart that went into it. :grouphug

Had I not been so focused on looking at the wound on his leg and paid more attention to the color of his skin in the abdomen area we would have known there was nothing to be done for him today. He was septic, needed major ABs earlier. Poor little thing. This just kills me.

Sara, I doubt there was anything that could have saved him. The wounds were massive.
We do our best... that's all we can ever do. :grouphug

Thanks HRT, I know there was nothing that could've been done. I knew it was a long shot when I first saw the leg. I just hate going into any situation with doubt in my heart. That prevents me from doing my best. I just prayed getting him cleaned up with ABs orally and on the wound and taking him Monday to the vet would save him. You guys were going to be his lifeline until then.
At least I know I'm now set up for an apocalypse when it comes to wounds. I bought enough supplies to sink a battleship.
Thank you to everyone who helped. He's at peace now with perfect little legs and no pain.
