Hello All,
I have an estimated 9-day old with pneumonia and am looking for anyone in the area that may have Baytril they could spare. I have had this girl for 5 days now, she fell out of a nest and has some injuries (cuts and scrapes from the fall). She has been eating pretty good until last night, approx. 6-7mL per day total. She had been slowly gaining weight, was 19g when we found her and this morning she weighed 23g though I am sure she will be losing weight now because her interest in eating has gone away. I noticed symptoms yesterday and the local veterinarians are not of much help. If anyone can be of assistance please reach out.
Thanks,
Scott

I'm at work right now but I'll bump your thread for others.
Can you get Ciprofloxacin? It is a human antibiotic that can be used.
Ask friends or family.

We searched the medicine cabinet and haven't found anything suitable. We are calling friends and family to see if they have anything. Best I have been able to find is Duramycin-10 (tetracycline) at the nearby farm/feed store. It recommends a does of 400-800mg per gallon of drinking water for poultry for respiratory issues. I'd rather use something else if at all possible as measuring that small of an amount accurately will be difficult (my scale has a resolution of 0.1g). I am confident this is aspiration pneumonia as we found the squirrel just before the long weekend and were ill-equipped for equipment in the feeding department which aspirated the tiny pinkie a few times. We now have all of the proper equipment but need to work through this if possible.
Thanks

If the packet is labeled as far as the MG, it could be used but we can't dose things in the gallon range. I have dosed tetracycline for aspiration pneumonia and it does work. Pet retailers sell tetracycline in the fish aquarium section.
Doxycycline and SMZ-TMP (Septra) can be used also.

Understood, but I was thinking I could make a gallon or two of the solution as that is about the minimum I could make with sufficient accuracy in measurement. Then I could use a very small amount of this treated water to make a hydration solution.

I get what you're saying Scott. That be difficult to keep track of dosing, and the frequency of dosing would be all over the place.
It would be easier to make a "just medicine" mixture and give it as directed by these folks.

Totally agree, just trying to think of anything we can do in the mean time.
So Scott, have you checked out the local pet stores for the fish antibiotic? You could call around while you wait for someone you know to get back to you.
Also, have you asked friends or family with pets if they have any of their's left over?

I am going to a pet store in about an hour to check. Still have not come up with anything with friends/family. Thanks.

It seems like there was a good rehabber near Boise mentioned on this forum some time ago. I wish I could remember the name. ...Someone who had about 20 years of experience with squirrels.

No luck at the pet store, called Toni (above mentioned rehabber) and described the issue, she is going to call back this afternoon. Until then I am just trying to offer Ebsilac/heavy cream mix and hydration solution made with the tetracycline @ 800 mg/gallon concentration and see if I can keep some fluids going in.

Call every woman you know. Cipro is the "go to" drug for urinary tract infections, and women tend to be the ones that get them. It is insanely effective at getting rid of them, so many people, despite what their doctors tell them, DON'T use the entire prescription.

I have cipro. I am in Darby Montana, about 75 mins from Salmon Idaho. Not sure how far that is from Boise but I'd love to help if I can.

Well I did the math with tetracycline. Just thinking out loud here.
The 181g pack contains a total 10g of tetracycline (18.1:1). So 18.1 grams of powder deliver 1g of tetracycline.
Estimated dosage for rodents, from what I have found is 10-20mg/kg. Squirrel has a mass of 23g (0.023 kg).
10mg of tetracycline would require 181mg of powder.
20mg of tetracycline would require 362mg of powder.
At the 20mg/kg dose, a 23g squirrel would require 0.46mg of tetracycline, or 8.326mg of powder. How do we accurately get this small amount dosed correctly...
I don't have a scale that will measure 8.326mg of powder. But let's multiply everything by 1000 for a minute. Create a solution with 8.326 GRAMS of powder, dissolve with 1L of water. Now we have the same ratio, and a thousandth of the solution (1mL) would yield the desired dose. After mixed into solution, 1mL of this solution should contain 8.32mg of powder and 0.46mg of tetracycline.
1mL is probably too much to get down the squirrel reliabily. Something like 0.1mL would be better. So if we put 10x the powder in (83.26 grams) in 1L water, now 0.1mL of the solution should yield our 0.46mg tetracycline dose. Yes it is a tremendous waste to scale up in this fashion, but it would yield a fairly reliable does provided the solution was completely mixed.

HOLD on, I will send you the dosing for the Doxy from the wild mammal baby book, which is the same for Tetracycline.
Are you saying that one pack is 10 mg or 10g?
Decided to post this here in case you need help.
I hope you can find the correct antibiotic but IF
this is needed at least you have the directions, though this
is NOT the choice drug.

The entire pack (Duramycin-10), which weighs 181 grams, contains 10 grams of tetracycline.

IF you dose this, have someone check it first.
I'm NOT even sure what you have should be used.
I personally would hold off, until HRT4SQRLS comes on.
I will send her a pm alert.

:panic That was my head officially exploding! :tilt Good idea, hold off.
We really strive to dose properly and this is scaring me. I'm going to look at this but I would REALLY like for you to get an antibiotic tablet. Someone in Idaho has to have an antibiotic left over.

Totally understand how important dosing is. The last thing I want is to make things worse. I just talked to Lori again (the local rehabber I found through this forum). Leaving in a few minutes to bring our little girl to her to see if she can help.

OK back home again and I am so glad I went. We THINK her nose was just plugged up and she couldn't breathe through her nose hence the kind of labored breathing, not wanting to eat much, and mouth breathing. We opted to not do antibiotics right now because after her nose was cleaned out she started breathing through her little nose again. I haven't fed her yet to see if she will suckle again but will in a bit.
And Toni has entrusted me with a buddy for her to keep her company, a little boy right about the same age that was dropped off last night... and I have a great local resource to help guide me through this. Will keep you all updated on how things go, thanks so much for the help so far.
Scott
Awww, I was entrusted with a buddy for my little lady when I first got her. Buddies are awesome.
It's great to have someone around who can help. I did too.
Show us some photos of your cuties when you get a chance!!
Glad she's not sick!:dance

Just fed them both, the new boy had no problem eating. Our girl still not much interested in eating, though she is still breathing normally through her nose. Will keep trying, hopefully she picks up a little bit through the night.

Scott, try a little warm honey water. Sometimes that will pick up the appetite. You can even dip the tip of the syringe in a little honey to get some interest. I did this a couple weeks ago and my little pinkie started eating better.
Also, pinkies like the formula very warm.... NOT hot though.
Watch her closely. If you hear any clicking at all, you need the antibiotics. I'm very glad you have a local contact.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try a little honey in the next feeding.
Here is a picture of them. She is the poor one with the banged up head. They sure seem to enjoy having a buddy to snuggle with.

I did try some honey on the tip of the syringe yesterday evening, seemed like it helped a little bit. I am encouraged by the 3am feeding, where she ate 0.8mL which is more than she put down in any of the feedings yesterday. She also ate about .5mL @7am this morning so I think her appetite may be coming back. Yesterday she had virtually no interest in eating. If she can keep eating a bit with every feeding through the day I will feel a lot better, but so far so good!

Scott, give her hydration IN BETWEEN the feedings. So let's say you have feeding scheduled for noon, 3PM and 6PM, you would give some additional hydration at about 1:30, 4:30, 7:30 and so on. The more hydrated they are the better they will eat.

Well so far so good, the girl's appetite is retuning and her feedings have gotten progressively better throughout the day today. I did give her some pedialyte between several feedings this afternoon. Her last two feedings this evening she downed a whole mL which is pretty good for her and her size. So I think she is returning back to normal pinkie mode and thank you all for the immediate help.
