Lilo had one incident i think may have aspirated. Not through her nose. She developed a click last night . it isnt as bad this morning. My vet is off till wednesday. Other vets wont see her cuz they dont know squirrels. Ive been searching from friends for antibiotics that i can use. Ive been searching forum to find a list of safe animal an human forms but havent found one. I cant find baytril or cipro.
So far fish antibiltocs may be only option.
API E.M. Erythromycin is available at pet store. So far thats my last resort. I have friends going through their supplies if i know what is safe

Have someone look for Cipro (Human) Baytril (Animal) or Clavamox (Animal) Augmentiin (Human)

Those were all my first options to search for, with no luck so far . now im researching trying to find alternatives to at least help her get through till wednesday. Any thing i have read online today i have come back to this board to validate i trust the opinions i find here more than anywhere else.
I did read API E.M. Erythromycin would help when in a pinch..but only found one post here so far mentioning it

That is a fish version of erythromycin... does that store have Fish Flox (which would be cipro) or Fish Mox (which is amoxicillin: Not ideal but better than erythromycin, but not as good as clavamox (augmentin) or cipro).
Note on erythromycin: While this is used in humans for "community acquired pneumonia" it is not a good antibiotic to treat a squirrel with aspiration pneumonia. Just thought I would point that out since a lot of folks understand erythromycin is used for people pneumonia! Still a last resort if nothing else can be located! :thumbsup

Thank you for that info i will check that out ive been sesrching for fish mox as well. I will only wait another hour to go and get whatever is best i can find. Clicking was louder last night, today it is softer at one point i thought it had stopped. She did this when i first got her for one day. And at the vets at beginning of the week she was all good.

Eejay,
Pet retailers also sell Tetracycline in the fish section. IMO, it is a much better choice than the erythromycin. While the erythromycin MIGHT work, it is a narrow spectrum antibiotic. If the organism is not in it's spectrum, the baby won't make it.
Tetracycilne is a much broader spectrum so that would be my choice. It also tends to be effective against the atypical infections. I have dosed it for aspiration pneumonia 2 times for baby squirrels and it worked both times.
I'm at work today. If Eejay gets tetracycline, it would be dosed like doxycycline. They are in the same class.

According to HRT's explanation of the drug I can agree it is not a "usual" med we recommend for AP but
I'm curious as to why you state this and based on what?
We haven't used Erythromycin for treating pneumonia that I'm aware of. It is safe for rats so it should be safe for squirrels. I also know that squirrels have taken Azithromycin for respiratory infections. It is in the same antibiotic drug class.
. I know Resilie took Azithromycin when she was treated for a presumed respiratory infection. It is a macrolide antibiotic ... Erythromycin
is as well so it should work.
Edit: (Post#7 we posted same time) Thank you HRT, that does give me some clarification.

I was speaking with a gentleman at a very large reputable pet store..they specialize in exotic fish. They have some products he thought i may be able to use. I was looking into Tetracycline.
as you replied. I just feeding Lilo now and then going to go to that store and see what i can get. I am taking screen shots of posts from here so i can have info on hand to show them.
Thank you so much for the help.
Lilo is not acting too different yet..and now the sound is quieting down a little.
She has pretty much slept the whole time i have had her which is a week now.
She is back to bed now. So im off to do some shopping for her

If anyone has any other info on resorting to fish or bird medicines that are over the counter it will take me at least half an hour to get to the store if you can post in the meantime for when i get there. Not sure about the U.S. but here in canada most of the other medicines like fish mox has been taken off the shelves unfortunately

Perhaps it would have been better stated had I said "it would not be one of the better choices of antibiotic to treat a squirrel with aspiration pneumonia"?
I was also being optimistic that the place that had the fish erythromycin may well have other, better, options. I did say it could be used if nothing else were found.

Thanks Spanky, obviously that is correct reasons explained by HRT. That's all I was asking, no "challenge" intended.
I do know that PetSmart also carries a fish ab that is Tetracycline.

Trying to post pics of probiotics i have
I use these capsules.
Pull them apart and give a size ~ O
They have a slightly sweet taste, and you can
either put it in formula or in a little water and give it
that way.

No worries! While both erythromycin and azithromycin are effective against gram negative organism, azithromycin does have a broader coverage of gram negative organisms versus erythromycin, however and unfortunately both are limited to gram negative organisms. I am happy tetracycline was found as it has a broad coverage that includes both gram + and gram - organisms!

Happy to say i appear to have a happier Lilo.clicking seemed to get softer yesterday. This morning i barely hear it. For the first time since ive had her she peeked her head out of her blankets to see what was going on. Also she stood on her hind legs for the first time checkin out the smells of my home.lol ( my daughter cooking bacon downstairs) thank you all for your info. I have never really had an animal get sick on me so it was a new experience i will better prepare for if i have orphans in the future

Clicking is gone and Lilo is active and starting to play now. So glad i was able to get her on meds within first 24 hours of the start of it. Think i nipped it before it could get worse.

I will be on and off the board a lot today, but will try to keep checking in.
Thank you Eejay for alerting me to this. :thumbsup
