View Full Version : Immodium dose/ help with diarrhea please.
Frances has been having on and off diarrhea (like one or two times a day) for a few days now. Last night she would only eat half of her formula and I didn't force her. She just seems like she doesn't feel well.
I had this problem a while ago when she switched from the Fox Valley 32/40 and Esbilac to the Fox Valley 20/50 and Esbilac. I took away all FV and just went with the Esbilac only and things got better, but since the mix seems to be the preferred route, I slowly transitioned her back to the 20/50/Esbilac mix (that the boy is on and is thriving on). She did fine for a while, it seemed, but things started to get a bit looser.
This morning I noticed butt wipes of loose stool in the cage and she didn't have a bm after her first feeding today. Then at the second feeding she left a mucousy yellow stool on the towel at feeding. I am worried that a little diarrhea can turn into a BIG problem.
As of today I have her on ONLY the Esbilac and will never give her FV 20/50 again (her body doesn't seem to tolerate it). But do you guys recommend Immodium to get it under control? And/or any other sure fire ways to help her little tummy?
Her weights for the past three days are as follows: 230, 243 and 250 today, so she isn't losing. And her skin turgor is good and her mucous membranes are wet.
She is currently being fed 12 ml every 4 hours (I realize she could stand to go up a tiny bit, but I don't want to increase until the diarrhea is under control).
I don't have any on hand, but I will go to the store right now and get whatever I need. I am worried about my grumpy girl :help and :thankyou

I would recommend a few feedings of homemade Pedialyte to flush her system of all the yuck that is messing it up, then start again with the Esbilac and see how it goes.
Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup hot water
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt

I would do the brac diet first. Take 2 tbs of formula and add 1/4 teaspoon gerber baby rice cereal and 1/4 tsp of baby banana food.

How old is Frances now?
Frances is 7 weeks today actually.

I get this, because I can do it through a syringe and she is still not a big eater of solid foods yet. But literally give her 12 ml of this for three consecutive feedings? I feel like this would give her water butt. Am I wrong?

The brac diet (I recognize this type of diet for use in humans and pets). Will it go through a nipple or can I expect to give it out of a nippleless syringe and sort of force feed it? Amount and duration?
Either of you: What about pumpkin or yogurt I see recommended sometimes on here? Or something absorbent to suck up the liquid part of her stool? Will the brac diet do this?

Just wanted to help with the clarification...
The mix will feed the same way as with reg formula, definitely hold him at the 5%.
Anytime with diarrhea hydration is recommended, a couple cc's in between a few reg feedings can only benefit.

Thank you for the clarification. I will feed brac for 24 hours or until the stool is formed again. I will supplement with home made gatorade (3 ml or so) in between the every 4 hour feedings. I'll return if I need further help. Thanks again!!

Hey Cava,
I see Step gave some info, good. I need to make a correction in the measurement. Take 3 tablespoons and add 1/2 level teaspoon of rice cereal powder and 1/2 teaspoon baby banana food. It is the roughage that helps the stools firm up.

3 tablespoons of formula
1/2 tsp powered rice cereal
1/2 tsp baby food banana
Mix together and feed in place of usual formula

Yes it will go through a nipple as Step has said. The rice cereal is flakes and dissolves completely in the Esbilac formula. If you got the kind of banana baby food that is "first foods" or "step 1" for infants it is almost liquified with no chunks in it. It will go through the nipple just like the formula does.
As for the pumpkin, I think it is fine but I have better success with the BRAC diet. Others do the pumpkin with success too. I might hold off on the Immonium until you see if the BRAC will help in a day or so. If no better then a dose of Immonium is ok to do. The dose for a 250 gram baby is 0.24 ml. Dose for 275 grams is 0.26 ml. Can be dosed 3 x a day. Remember Immodium treats symptoms not the cause of diarrhea. We can try to figure out what the cause is.
This little stinker!
She's 7 weeks fyi. I made the BRAC, which smells delish by the way, and she would only take 5 ml's. She ran for her life so I let her be. Then when she was back in the cage and I was feeding my little man, she was zipping around, doing acrobats, wrestling with the new tiny stuffed animals I bought them tonight and SHOVED A RODENT BLOCK IN HER MOUTH and ate half of it right in front of me. Like, chewed it up and swallowed it. :thinking
What the?? NOW she starts eating them?
She is hellbent on confusing me, I swear. Anyway, I'll up the feedings to every two hours to keep up with her daily amount, and to maintain weight (and to hopefully get some beautiful :poop:poop:poop.)
I understand about the Immodium. I didn't pick any up. I'll use it as a last ditch. Thanks!

I would hold off on increasing the feeding amounts because she is eating solids and uping the feedings might complicate the diarrhea. I would not go over 5% yet. I know she is under that but the solid foods count in her kcal count. IMHO You can up the amount of formula a little at a time but only up to 5% until we figure out the diarrhea and clear it up. After the diarrhea clears up you can slowly take her up to 6-7%. Just my thoughts on this. :grin3

I wasn't going to up the amount, just the frequency of feeding. She was eating 12 ml every four hours, but if she's refusing to eat more than 5 ml currently, I was going to offer it to her every 2 hours. Like splitting the feedings up. It wouldn't be a daily increase it all, just a frequency increase to get to her to take what she already was.
Or should I let her body do it's thing for the next 24 hours and if she only wants 5 or 6 ml per feeding every 4 hours let her?
Again, no signs/symptoms of dehydration. Urine is clear and normal amount. But currently no poo, just some dried mucus on bottom (which I am cleaning and using coconut oil for the sensitive parts to avoid rawness.)

As I posted I started thinking .... just want to clarify I think I would not feed more often. I would keep her at every four hours 4 x a day. Or if she is hungry I would feed every 4 hours 5 x a day. Just monitor her weight daily for continued weight gain to decide if 4 x or 5 x per day. I hope that helps. I am thinking every 2 hours might be too often. And we do want her to begin to eat more block and solid foods.
Just saw your post. I am thinking evey 2 hours may be too often but you could try that method to see. I just think every 2 hours is too close. Maybe try every 3 hours

Thank goodness. I didn't want to do every two hours! :tongue3
You guys, thank you so much.
My chunky rodent monkey is hungry again. For the first time ever, she hung on the bars and stared me down while I fed little man. Usually I have to chase her around to get her out for feedings. Someone loves the delicious BRAC formula! :banana
This morning her stool is brown and runny, as opposed to yellow/clear and snotty, so that's better I think.
I'm a happy momma this morning! Also today's weight is down to 244 from 250, not surprising, but I'll keep a close eye.

Hi Cava,
We enjoy reading your posts. You is a funny lady.
Yeah! Diarrhea! It is mysterious and complicated for us humans. Most likely momma squirrels don't have to deal with it a ton or we would find more squirrel babies on the ground.
I too believe that you are moving in the right direction with brown runny poo. Glad to hear that Frances was into her morning chow. That is how 99.99% of squirrel babies her age eat. I bet Basil eats well. The blocks that Frances is eating will help firm stool also because of the roughage. If it is parasitic, nothing will help except treating for that type of parasite.

Houston, we have beautiful :poop
Today Frances has solid poos the color of chocolate :easter1 and I am so relieved. And instead of running away from me when I get her out to feed, she ran out the cage door and sat on the feeding mat and looked at me (happy tear).
And she is at her highest weight to date: 256 g.
So...I imagine I'll keep making BRAC but adding half as much rice and banana, every time I make a new batch until I am just at Esbilac. Does that seem like the best way to transition her back? And once I do that, and all the poops are great, I'll slowly (SLOOOOOWLY) increase her up to where she should be each feeding.
Bless the BRAC and you guys for helping without making her take medications. Go Frances!!
**and yes, Basil is practically perfect in every way. They are yin and yang. He runs out and picks up the syringe and puts the nipple in his mouth and waits for me to grab hold and push the plunger. Bless his tiny little heart!
