Help. I have a baby gray who just opened his eyes. Have had him three weeks. Eating great and appears to be very healthy. He crawls all over the place and loves to be held and pet. I know when they first open their eyes they really don't have good vision right away, or balance, however he constantly throws his head back and to the left, making him fall over. Sometime he crawls perfectly fine then flips to the left again. I'm worried cause it looks like he's brain damaged or something. Has anyone ever seen them do this? Hoping he grows out of it in a few days as he gets better vision and balance. Freaking out in the meantime.

:Welcometo TheSquirrelBoard

Thanks for helping the baby. They are pretty wobbly when they're young. Let's HOPE that this is just that and not something like neurological issues related to brain injury.

Let's start with the basics. What have you been feeding the baby? We like to start there. :thumbsup

This the powdered Esbilac and the liquid?

What kind of container are you using? Can you post picture of him?

He really should not need the additional salt-sugar water with the formula. It is best to mix the the formula a few hours ahead of time since it provides more time for the powder to fully dissolve, making it easier for the babies to digest.

He looks adorable... it may be the angle of the picture, but is his belly bloated? Just wondered if he might have gas pains causing the head toss? :dono

If it is always to the left, it may well be an injury to the head or spine though. He was not doing this before he opened his eyes?

Do you know anything of his history... could he have fallen from his nest?

yes he fell from tall pine trees. dogs found him but didn't touch him. he is somewhat bloated and were working on that. recommendation appreciated. couldn't tell if he did it before he was able to lift his head. he wiggled and jerked all the time except when in a deep sleep. obvious now but he seems fine for a minute then weird. if he's sniffing he walks normal, then head goes up. i do mix only enough for one day ahead of time. love him to pieces.

You can give him a couple of drops of simethicone for the bloat.
Has he gone potty or is it only "gas" that's making him bloated?

Head trauma can cause seizures.
I have a head trauma girl that I am babysitting for.
3 years ago, I was also babysitting her, and she opened her
eyes. I knew she was vision impared that minute. We believe
she is blind in one eye and can see shadows from the "good eye"
I wonder if your little one may also have vision problems.
From that day on, she would get occasional seizures.
Has his "conditon" gotten "worse" since his eyes opened?

That blank stare is exactly what I saw in Owena, the squirrel I wrote about.
Hopefully your little one is just trying to focus.

I can't figure out how to post a new thread. I've been reading some things on head trauma and ran across the words pred and dex. No idea what these mean.

In the middle of the section you will see NEW THREAD... Click on it.

It will open up a post box. Give a title and post away.

By the way... Pred and Dex are Prednisone and Dexamethasone. (Steroids)

Can you tell me when and how those would be used. If the head trauma occurred when he was a tiny baby 4 weeks ago, would doing anything like that help now? I don't have time to read read read right now but would do anything if it would help. My little one walks around fine when sniffing, when he picks his head up it's sideways, sometimes jerking to the side till he falls over, sits with head to the side. Not sure if he's blind or can see motion or light. Just opened his eyes 3 or 4 days ago. Can the steroids help at any time or do they have to be immediately upon injury. Love him somuch
