Long story short. Neighbor (who is a property manager for a large shopping center) called me today and said one of his tree trimming guys caused a squirrel nest to fall out of a palm tree he was trimming. 4 baby furred squirrels inside, nest destroyed. I told him to put the babies in a box at the base of the tree and monitor for mom. I was across town and drove to the shopping center. When I got there, he showed me where the box was and there were no squirrels inside. He had not monitored it. The nest originally was in a palm tree in a landscaped island at the busy vehicle entrance and exit to this shopping center.

My question is....what is the likelihood that the momma squirrel could have gotten all 4 squirrels to safety by crossing the entrance and exit lanes with a baby in her mouth? Four times, no less! We looked under all the bushes for the babies and none were found. The box was tall enough that I don't believe they could have crawled out. He also said they were pretty wobbly. The only other item in the island was a monument sign that did have an opening between the bottom of the sign and the ground. My second question is....would a momma squirrel move her babies to an area like that to get them undercover temporarily, or could (or would) she have made a second nest under there?

The only other possibility would be that someone took them, but the box was behind bushes and hidden from traffic. I would also think if someone took them they would take the box they were in as well.

I wish I knew definitively that they are alright. I'm a worrier. :panic:panic

I would bet that mama got them. Who else would have had any more time than her to get them? :grouphug:Love_Icon:grouphug
