Hello to all.. I am new here. Recently received a young squirrel.. Im estimating age at 4 to 5 weeks.. She weighs 100 g has bottom teeth top ones are not in yet. Covered in black fur... Belly isnt fully grown in yet though..tail does appear full and quite lush and almost shows signs of a bend starting still lays flat .she deficates on her own. Ive tried to stimulate her to urinate but that hasnt worked yet.. But she will urinate when i am handling her.
Her 2 siblings sadly were deceased when she was found. Mama did not return after my friend waited approx 5 hours i was told.
This is my first time with a squirrel. Ive rescued and released raccoons and cottontails..
Ive had her for 3 days. And she has improved significantly.today was the first time she was active and awake exploring for about 15 minutes. Have an appointment with the vet tomorrow..
I have not heard her make any sounds at all. I am wondering if this is a normal thing? When would i expect some vocalizations?

Thank you for rescuing this baby. Actually, baby squirrels are pretty quiet. There are some that will cry out or alarm call but most don't make a peep. Some babies make grunting, oinking or purring sounds. I have one now that is a super noisy eater. I have never heard such slurping and sucking noises from such a tiny baby. :grin2 Other than her noisy eating sounds she is as quiet as a mouse.
What are you feeding the baby? Are the eyes open?

Esbiliac. Powder. Still not at 100% formula though. It took over 24 hours to rehydrate her enough
Ive mixed a small batch as per intructions. Then i fed her 1 part formula with 3 parts water the first 2 feedings. Then have been slowly increasing the strength at each feeding since.. Next feeding will be 3 parts formula 1part water. Im trying to transition softly..her eyes were open saturday..but they were weak looking.. I wasnt sure if that was age related, or from feeling weak. her eyes look so much stronger and livlier now.i was kinda worried lack of vocalization was caused from fear or weakness.has she has only really been mobile once which was this evening (15minutes). she actually climbed my arm and walked steadier than saturday. She barely dragged herself 3 days ago

Your Lilo was blessed to find you. Thank you for saving her. All the information on the big wide web can be overwhelming. I guarantee if you stick with TSB you'll be able to find sound advice about all aspects of squirrel care-- from pinky babies all the way through post release. Welcome!
I think this was probably a typo, but after recently miscalculating formula to water when mixing up a batch I fed my baby at 1/2 strength when she was ready for full strength formula. Big oops! I caught it fairly early & switched the formula right away, but until then I had a super- hydrated but ravenous baby. :embar
I see that you're gradually increasing the Esbilac, but the part about 3 parts formula to one part water-- that's not what you meant, right? Full strength formula is 2 parts water to 1 part formula-- 1 cup water: 1/2 cup formula, etc.
Just wanted to check since I recently made a mixing mistake even tho I've mixed gallons of formula in the past. :thumbsup

I mixed the formula at full strength kept it separate then added more water to dilute it even more. This mornings feed we are up to full strength formula now.. I was worried she wasnt hydrated enough yet to go full strength but didnt want to wait any longer getting her on formula

Thank you for rescuing this sweetie. When you get a chance post some pics. We :Love_Icon pics. My babies don't make much noise other than when one wakes the other one up changing sleeping position.
Excuse me since I haven't even finished my first cup of coffee but when I read you had raised raccoons a slight alarm went off in my brain. I believe there is something that raccoons carry, so a cage used for a raccoon should not be used for a squirrel. Hopefully one of our other members will clarify this or I'll find it after more coffee. :grin3

Yes, a racoon cage should never be used for any other species because of the specific roundworm in raccoons which is deadly to all other animals.

No worries. I realize the risks with raccoons.. It is a new cage that i have Lilo in.. The cage i had for the raccoon i actually created a tree house with it when i released him so he would have a home when he was released.

Thanks IR! For the life of me I could not remember what it was. I am adding the information to my notebook.

Our vet check went very well.. Lungs are clear..eyes are bright..fur is shiney she was a little active ..lol cuz of the cold exam table. Weighs 110g. He said a little under weight but that is to be expected since we dont know how long she was alone and exposed to the elements. She has nice pink colour in her mouth. Im feeling very optimistic now :)
