My squirrel recently gave birth. She didn’t seem to gain any weight and never looked pregnant, but suddenly started staying in her house all day, only coming out before dark to gather more leaves and quick eat a little in between or to chase other squirrels away. This behavior lasted a week during which her nipples were only very prominent one or two days. She doesn’t look like she is carrying much milk. At about the one week mark, she came out a little more and has since been spending lots of time away from her house. My question is is this normal behavior for a mother with babies that are so young? Will the babies be okay? I worry about them and about her producing enough milk since there are days where she still looks skinny with not much showing. Also, is there anything I can give her to help her produce more milk and stay healthy? I try to feed her Henry’s healthy blocks, nut squares or veggie squares but she doesn’t always eat them. I thought about purchasing calcium enriched cherry yogurt hearts.

Are you sure the babies are still alive?

I had an over winter female that must have been bred first day she was released? About a month later she was injured and we brought her back in. several wks later
put her back out and several days later, I noticed she had nursed on nippies. At first she was hardly ever out of the nest box, but then she started being out more and more. I got suspicious and peaked in when she was doing a walk-a-bout and the 3 babies had died. Don't know if she lost her milk or what.

So today she had two males chasing her and one continuously trying to mount her..she's now stuck out through the night because one wouldn't let her get home. I thought it was late for mating ..especially considering she just had a baby/babies.

This happens more during the 'hot' summer than in the winter. I think they die of heat.... but that's here in GA.
