Please read the email I just received (below).

What do I tell her to do until I can get to the baby tomorrow and transfer to a licensed rehabber?? I've told her to stop the chicken food and almonds and fruit. And to continue to offer water. Since it's not lapping I'm assuming it's a young one that was still nursing.

By "pine squirrel" does she mean red squirrel?

I am in tears thinking about this mother squirrel and her baby :(

Thank you for your help.

Hi! We live in St Maries, ID, and I work at the Stimson Lumber Mill. This last Monday my coworker found a mature dead pine squirrel during clean-up. It appeared that it was in a tree and has its nose/face cut off. :-( My next thought was why it would have stayed on the log......a baby. A short time later my co-worker came into the break room holding a box and said it stumbled out of the savings and was following them around and was smaller than the dead one. We tried puppy formula but it doesn't like lapping liquid for some reason. He/she keeps getting it's noise in it and panicking. Will lick water off of our fingers though. We tried giving it chicken food also, but it only ate that the first night. I'm worried (i know) it's not getting enough nutrients. The only thing we have that he/she will take readily is almond slivers, and a little bit of strawberry and devourer peach flesh (worried it's too much sugar). We also offered it sticks to chew and an antler but it refused both.
After my research we are sure we don't have the time it needs, long-term, and didn't know there were any rescues. Please let me know if someone close who can take him/her. Unfortunately, our only vehicle has been down for a couple weeks now and will be for one more. This little one needs help soon though.

Since you are going to get it tomorrow I would say for them to just stick with the water and find a secure container to make a warm bed and place it in a quiet area. They probably don't have a heating pad but maybe they could make a rice buddy just in case this one is small enough to need supplemental heat.
