View Full Version : No poop after kitten formula?

I picked up a little girl this afternoon, I think her eyes will open next week.
The people who found her gave her kitten formula, and she was super dehydrated when I got her.
Sub-Q'd fluids, she's passing the skin pinch test now, and I've started her on 3 parts water to one part formula, but I'm concerned because she has yet to poop. Pee is happening, but no poop. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but I think she's a little constipated. Can I give her some baby gas medicine to clear the kitten milk crap out?

Also, should I stick with just giving her fluids until some poop happens? She is hungry and has eaten well the three times I've fed her.

The gas meds couldn't hurt. I'd also try soaking her in warm water up to her chest and gentle massages to her belly. In past experience I have done this by making strokes from outside edges of their bellies towards the anus basically trying to move things in the direction you want them to go.

Worth a try. Will do. :)

Still no poop. Getting worried now.
Repeated the bath this morning and gave her a little more gas medicine.

Any other suggestions for a laxative for this little squirrel?
I just gave her some water last night, and I'm going to give her a little more until I get some poo. I don't want to add to the issue.

Is she actually bloated?

3 to 1 formula = very few milk solids - that is, she really hasn't gotten a lot to poop out yet - mostly hydration and watered down formula. She may just not have enough solids in her little bowels yet to produce any poops.

Can you post pics? From the front and a side view. Bloat is a hard tight tummy that's usually rounded out front like a beer gut. A full tummy usually spreads side to side and may feel firm but still a little squishy like a balloon that's lost a little air.

Usually when they have been fed the kitten formula they are presenting with diarrhea. I agree with Crittermom that she has not gotten food to poop out yet, as long as she is not bloated.

Also, if she was really dehydrated it will take longer than 12 hours to fully hydrate her. I would keep giving her hydration formula for the next couple days. For today figure out 33% of her body wt and split that amt into 3 feedings. For instance, if she weighs 45g then 33% of that is approx. 1.5 ccs divided by 3 = .5. So between feedings today give her 0.5ccs of hydration fluid.

Next two days is the same thing except you will take 25% of body wt. so if she gains two grams today and on tomorrow's weigh in she is 47 g, then 47 x .025 = 1.18, split that into 3 and you will give her approx .5ccs of hydration fluid 3 times between formula feedings.

Same for the third day.

Crittermom, I wasn't sure about the bloating, it was just the only straw I had to grasp at. I've seen bloat before, but now I am starting to think this is different.
In the pictures, I know it's hard to see, but she has a dark circular shape in her lower right abdomen. I've gently pressed on it and it's rather hard... It didn't seem to make her uncomfortable when I did that, but I'm pretty concerned about it. I've never seen that in a baby squirrel. It's more prominent today than last night.

As of yet, there has been no diarrhea, so maybe she was a good baby and didn't eat any of the kitten milk.

Redwuff, I'll start doing that. I pulled my scale out earlier.

HOUSTON WE HAVE POOP!

Still worried about the lump though. I assume she fell out of a tree, is it possible she has a bruised organ?

I cropped you photos so they are easier to see. Bruising is very common in babies that fall and some may not show up for a day or two.

Thank you for cropping them!

Hopefully that is all that is and she'll be fine. She's very active and doesn't act sick or in pain.
