Today I released my sweet squirrel rescue, Jeffrey. I'm still a little teary-eyed over it. But I got my courage to do it from the Squirrel Board. I keep telling myself "a day in the trees is better than a lifetime in a cage..." - one of your member's signature lines. As an amateur, it was great to be able to get advice from such knowledgeable people. I feel good to be able to release a very healthy squirrel - diet complete with the help of Henry's blocks and a 3-dose set of ivermectin treatments for the mange mites that seemed to be setting in just before I was about to release Jeffrey a couple of weeks ago (thank you, Island Rehabber).
It's been great to share in the squirrel love for the past four months. I'll never look at a squirrel in the same way again, and I hope that I somehow get the opportunity to share time with another squirrel in the future. I see that same affection in all of your posts. As I have read here, most squirrels go on their way, even if they have returned the love - so I've braced myself to never see my little fellow again. But I hope that he does return occasionally. His release cage and food will be available for him if he wants it.
Thanks again.
