I have been watching this squirrel, a female I believe for about a week now it just came back to the nest after a long absence, babies I believe, and I thought I noticed a mouth injury the other day and now today she is staring out the entrance for a while now, and just making this whining noise that is unlike anything I have heard a squirrel make before so I was wondering if someone could go to you stream to the gray squirrel nest and see if they hear what I'm talking about and make an assessment . I guess I have heard that sound before but I'm not sure what it means and this little girl has been worrying me. The nest is in New York somewhere. I am in Florida. Just wondering how to go about or anyone to go about checking on this Squirrel or finding out even wear this nest is .

Here are some pics I managed to get. Look at the mouth. Does this look like an injury.

I really can't tell much from the photos. I checked the cam and she's out right now but I will try and check later.

She is finally back at the nest sleeping but I snapped a picture of her hand, and 277169so as not to be paranoid I wanted to ask if her hand looked abnormal to anyone else. Burned maybe?

Here is another shot of her hand and if you zoom in on it she has no nails.

Yes, to me, her hand looks dark brown/black colored and in the following post her mouth also looks that same color. Wonder if it is burnt or just stained from black walnuts or some other kind of nut that stains?
EDIT-the closer I look at the 2nd picture her wrists looks really dark also.

I cannot get to the webcam to see it. I am in central NY..center of state, not NYCity. To me, it looks like she stepped in tar. Right now, people are sealing roads and driveways. Last weekend I received 3 tar covered Sparrows. They think its water, when it gets pooled on the edges. as long as she keeps returning, its nothing to trap her over. I have had/seen worse issues over pine sap. :grouphug

I noticed that it is on both of her front feet and a couple of days ago I did think she had an injury around her mouth but I couldn't see her hands then. Will she be able to get the tar off, and will she be able to eat?

She seems to be getting it off I noticed. I can see her hands now and pieces of tar still sticking on them. I saw her pulling at it a few times while napping. It's a relief she is able to climb the tree safely and eat. I was worried her claws were gone. :bliss. Here is a snapshot of her today. For anyone who would like to see her, she can be seen on U stream via live webcam under gray squirrel nest. Grey or gray. I think with an A.

Omg...she has a terrible thermal injury which could be very deep. Is there any way to contact the owner of that webcam? Tar can be removed with chemicals or mayonnaise. Pulling it off like this squirrel is doing will pull off layers of her skin leaving her vulnerable to infection and fluid loss.

Remember this thread? I wonder if this poor squirrel stepped in tar.

I'm not sure. I know it's in New York and I'm not. I will see what I can find out.

Do you actually know where this nest is? DaSquirrelGirl said it looks like a thermal burn. Just wondering who takes care of the nest.

I can't see that her hands have a moderate or severe burn, but if that black stuff was tar, it's possible. Poor baby.

I have no idea where the nest is. I still cannot get to the site to watch the webcam. :(. I DO know that there is usually chat with the cams. We have a Peregrine Falcon cam near me and people watch it like hawks, no pun intended. They had 4 chicks this Spring. Two were in trouble..the town went CRAZY! News, Police, tons of cam watchers...chaos. I also know that the Eagle cam is supervised, as they had to go fix the nest a couple of times. Can you send me a link to the squirrel cam? My guess is that she is being observed. Unless, its a private person cam, but am sure educated people like you are watching. :grouphug

My ancient computer allowed me to find/view it!:dance. Nest is empty and there were zero viewers. Says cam is in Rush, NY. That is 10 miles south of Rochester. Mapquest says 2hours and 6 minutes from me. :grouphug

Yes, sorry about not answering sooner. I haven't seen her for two days. She does that. She was there Wednesday morning and then left, and I haven't seen her back cents . She must have a second nest somewhere. If this is the same Squirrel, she was there for a while pregnant and then disappeared for a month or so and then came back not pregnant.

I was given an address for New York wild at aol.com and I sent them a message asking if this was their nest in New York and could they check on her if it was but I just got that information and I just sent the message and she hasn't been there for two days so we will have to wait-and-see .:dono:peek1
