Wallace the baby squirrel made it through two nights. Cat dragged it in. She is syringe feeding, and I've guided her on several things, but she has several questions I don't know the answer to.

His skin doesn't "tent" when I pinch it on his shoulders but it does on his back until he moves. Is he dehydrated?

"when he last defected it was orange-ish and pellet shaped but seemed more watery than the two days previous, is that diarrhea? Also this morning in his box there seemed to be little spots of the feces smeared in place that weren't pellets,
So that worries me."

He squeaks when he eats and not every time. No clicking. Thoughts?

"OH and how would I know if he's not ok to be handled with bare hands? I'm washing them constantly of course but I was using gloves for the first two days before i started thinking he probably needed skin to skin contact like human babies?"

She watched a video on expressing his bladder and is doing that as well as feeding him kitten formula through the night every two hours.

I have advised to switch to either the goats milk concoction or to esbilac puppy formula (ordered on Amazon will be here Friday). And I gave her the chart for how much to feed and showed her a video of how to feed. He weighs 1.4 oz. 39.68 grams.

She's waiting to be approved here.

Also he is furry. Not a pinkie.

My biggest concern right now is since he was cat caught he may need antibiotics. Hopefully others will chime in soon and can advise on meds.

The kitten formula he is on can cause loose stools so I would flush him by giving the homemade rehydration recipe for a several hours and move him to the homemade goat's milk recipe (leave the cream out for the first few feedings). We can advise how to transition him to the Esbilac when it comes in. Feeding is based on 5-7% of body weight and if he's fully furred he can go at least 3 hours between feedings but I would give hydration solution in between feedings. Feeding too often can also cause loose stools.

He shouldn't need his bladder expressed, usually a warm cotton swab, wet finger or a child's paintbrush "tickling" him will be enough stimulation. If he's dehydrated he won't go much.

Bare hands are fine and they love to be cuddled and stroked just like a kitten.
A picture would help us figure out age.

Baby needs antibiotics right away cos cat saliva is deadly. You can use Clavamox or bayt ( human version is Cipro ). We will dose it for you.

Has baby been hydrated at all?

What city and state is she in, perhaps we can find her
help.
Also as redwuff said, Clavamox (Augmentin), Cipro (human ab.) or Baytril (animal ab.) is vital.
He needs this NOW as cat saliva is deadly to squirrels.

Correction, a bit of a pinkie, not much fur.
she is doing a rehydration formula, but I don't know what, and she did put topical antibiotics on, but I also don't know which kind.

sorry guys, I'm trying to translate all of this until she is approved to join the board.
And I'm not with her in person.

Start asking friends if they have any cipro, commonly prescribed for uti. Clavamox or bay are pet meds and see if any one has any or they have to be gotten from vet.

She is closer to two weeks and thanks for helping your friend. Tell her it is urgent bout the antibiotics.

We can post dosage as soon as we know what abs and strength she gets and they all need to be given or orally.

Has injectable penicillin for dogs and cats in syringe form.

Tell your friend not to worry about going to the store to get pedialyte. All she needs is 2 cups of water, 1.5 Tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Give this for the first 24 hours and then make it up without the salt. Should be served very warm and to a warm baby.

The ones others have listed are proven and I don't do meds so I can not advise on the others. If your friend has someone with fish ask around and see if they have Fish Flox (Ciprofloxacin).

Hi, I'm the person with the baby. I've gotten the goats milk mixture ready and just gave him 1tsp of the hydration formula. I need a new syringe, the marks have worn off. I'm trying to find the antibiotics. Also, I'm worried that the squeaking noise has developed into slight clicks, the antibiotics should help with that too, right?

Take 10 ccs of suspension fluid or water and dissolve capsule contents in it.

I just remembered that I need to put this in a private message. Do you know how to open a pm

Sent a pm with instructions, but will repeat it here. Please write it down cos admin may remove it.

Take 10 ccs or 2 teaspoons of water and mix contents of capsule on it. Mix very well each time you dose. Baby gets .01ml of suspention or 1drop from your syringe. Dose 3x a day and keep suspention in fridge. Gave my cp # in PM if you need more help.

I need to start the antibiotics right away, yes? Also i just gave him more re-hydration formula and it did come out of his nose so now I'm feeling a little bit panicked that I've given him pneumonia if he didn't have it already. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to see about the clavamox, and I've had a couple of people with experience offer to take him. I'll keep everyone posted.

If you have people with experience and they have the meds then get this baby to them ASAP. He may not have until morning as cat saliva can take them down FAST. Not every one that aspirates will get pneumonia but since this one's system is already weakened it's more likely. Do you know of any friends that have fish aquariums that might have Fish Flox? It's the same as Cipro and would be better. The sooner meds are started the better chance he has.

Continue hydrating but go drop by drop and keep the baby's belly towards the ground, head up tail down.

If you have people with experience offering to take him, that would be his best possible chance.
These little ones can go down hill SO fast.
The antibiotic you are giving is NOT the best choice.
Can you get him to someone with experience?
Perhaps they have the correct meds.
Time is NOT on your side. :(

The antibiotic you are using Cephalexin, is for gram positive bacterial infections.
Cat bites (pasteurella) are Gram-negative.
You are new to this, and all the more reason to turn this little one
over to someone who has done this before.
He has too much stacked against him, for a beginner. :(

You are doing the best thing. Stick around with us and learn. It seems that once you find a squirrel they tend to start finding you. A cat bite baby is not the way to start out. It's definitely for experienced hands. I am sure she will keep you updated. Just say some prayers, this little one is going to need them.

I would absolutely love the opportunity to do this again with one that wasn't bitten! I shouldn't have gone out and gotten all the formula stuff today haha! Who else is going to drink goat's milk now???:grin2

Yes, you can freeze it. Most of us will admit that we have a lot of freezer space devoted to cans of goat's milk, Esbilac, bags of FV formula and Henry's Healthy Blocks. Usually the only thing I have to run to the store for is heavy whipping cream since my flyers get yogurt. I have totes full of fleece, assorted cages, a tackle box full of syringes, nipples, etc... and even an emergency kit in my car. Helping out these little ones can take over your life easily but you will make a lot of friends and learn a lot. :grouphug
