I know this article has gliders on it but it's an article about aflatoxins and some measures we can take to help prevent, atleast to some extent, the mold that produces aflatoxins.

Is this something that could be produced by a fresh pecan that was buried but later dug up and eaten by a squirrel?
I ask because a have lots of pecan trees, and the squirrels are constantly burying them. I've also seen them dig up old, black pecans and eat them!

From what I've been reading up on, any conditions that are suitable for mold growth can grow mold that produces aflatoxins.
I'm assuming that squirrels and chipmunks have the ability to smell what's been affected or not.
I don't think all things buried will produce mold, and not all mold produces aflatoxins.
These guys have been eating buried stashes since the beginning of time I wouldn't be worried about them.
I am concerned however for our babies who live indoors with us and only have what we give them.
And for all we know there could be something in the wild they eat that helps combat the aflatoxins issue. They eat so much things we really don't know for certain 100% about that. But somehow they just know.
Until Henrys Healthy pets and this board I never knew about aflatoxins, I've been reading about them as much as possible.
I wanted to know if you could see aflatoxins, but from what I've read it appears as though the aflatoxin is invisible.
While the presence of mold is a good red flag. The mold is visible, but the aflatoxins are not visible from what I gather.
I found this article and wanted to share with all.
I know a lot of people give acorns too.
I was considering it too, but after all I've read, me personally I'm just going to steer clear of them.
I wouldn't worry about trees in the yard and your wild babies. Squirrels need trees and the nut and the squirrel have been a good team for eons.
Just my personal opinion.
If I'm wrong someone please correct me. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this danger that I knew nothing of until I found this board.
