I know that aflatoxins can be a very present and really deadly threat lurking around the corner for our fuzzies. And I read all I could before posting this about aflatoxins and acorns.
I have a question that I don't remember reading if this was ever brought up so here goes.
If you cut up an acorn, can you tell if there is aflatoxins in it?
If I missed it, and this was covered, I apologize.
I have a chipmunk not a squirrel, and as she is only one quarter the size of a gray squirrel I would only give her a piece of an acorn and take away what she didn't eat so she cannot stash it.

And I have another question. Are there certain species of oaks that are poisonous and to avoid? Black oaks, White oaks and Pin oaks are all I think there is with differing subspecies of oaks.
I read somewhere that black oaks are bad stay away from them, but white oaks are ok, don't know about pin oaks, and I have post oaks in my yard which are a subspecies of the white oaks.
Honestly I would not have given that a thought had I not read that. But there is all kinds of crazy stuff on the Internet and don't know what to believe. It doesn't sound right to me.
So I put it out to you guys who know your stuff.

Is there a way to tell if there is aflatoxins in an acorn if you cut it up?
Is it invisible? Or can you tell?

I've always heard it's invisible. But I know that some do cut open the acowns and ditch any discolored ones. Not much help, so consider this a :bump
